Took on localcarhires.com Audi A3 diesel automatic. When booking, we paid 10% prepayment. We were met at the airport, we quickly issued everything, we gave the keys. The car was served clean. Casco was included in the price. Only a minor side - we asked for a navigator, but they forgot to bring it. But this, rather, from the principle I indicate, because no problem using a phone with gps. 90% of the remaining amount after prepayment was paid in cash upon receipt of the car. And, most importantly, it was not a risk to leave any depositis at all. Which was very cool. Loved the car. Just a superb feeling. Even revised his attitude to the manual transimission. Traveled all over Montenegro, all serpentines, parks, etc. (Fortunately, there were no restrictions on mileage and trips to border countries). We returned the car at the airport. Everything went somehow swiftly and easily - they met us, accepted the keys and, quickly examined the car, said thanks and left. In short, the experience turned out to be extremely positive; in general, no problems arose at any stage. The car had some small defects on the bumpers, but they didn't affect the driving performance, so we can say that the car was in good condition. Well, it was passably 🙂 Positive points: we did get the car, with child seat and the configuration as described. The air conditioner and lights were working. And they didn’t take a deposit at all. Plus we returned the car 1h later than booked without extra charge. Negative points: they were late at the airport, we had to wait 30 minutes. 2 young men brought the car, but they hardly helped us with the luggage (and we were a company of 2 women and a child). When issuing the rental agreement, they forgot to state the full CDW which I payed extra, I had to remind them. They didn’t have change, so I paid 5 euro more (and noone met us when we were returning the car, so I didnt get it back — not a big deal, but they even didnt say sorry). The driver seat smelled with sweat, it was unpleasant. The car system was showing the exclamation mark mentioning tyres, break lights and start/stop system - I had to pump up the tires - and they didnt answer my message about these warnings (I noticed it only after we started our journey). Oh and the child seat was very used. So in general, the car was functioning and all extras I ordered were provided, but it wasn’t a smooth experience.

What you should know before driving
🛣️ Montenegro is all serpentines. The coast road around the Bay of Kotor is stunning but narrow, with sharp hairpins and no guardrails in places. Glebs 🇱🇻 loved the Skoda Kamiq for it: "Excellent for the narrow and winding mountain roads." Don't rent a 1.0L engine if you're heading inland — Janis 🇱🇻 says small engines "should be prohibited in mountainous areas."
🌍 Sort out cross-border documents before you leave. If you plan to drive to Croatia, Albania, or Bosnia, confirm the green card (insurance for abroad) with your owner at booking. Henriikka 🇫🇮 didn't — and had to buy €50 insurance at the Albanian border. Vadims 🇱🇻 did it right: his owner Goran arranged extra insurance for nearby countries at pickup.
⛽ Choose your fuel station carefully. Some stations have been known to add water to the petrol. Rhidian 🇬🇧 got an engine warning light near Perast — his owner told him it happens and it's because of bad fuel. Stick to well-known brands.
🅿️ Parking in summer is a battle. Budva, Kotor Old Town, and Tivat get packed July–August. Street parking fills up fast. Rustam rented a compact convertible specifically because it was "perfect for finding parking spots even in busy areas."

Driving basics
Montenegro drives on the right. Speed limits: 50 km/h in cities, 80 km/h on open roads. There are no real highways — the fastest stretches allow around 100 km/h. Blood alcohol limit is 0.03% — effectively zero tolerance. Headlights must be on day and night, all year round.
Coastal roads are paved but narrow with frequent hairpin turns, especially around the Bay of Kotor. Inland roads to Durmitor and Žabljak are scenic but slow — budget more time than GPS suggests. Watch for cattle and rockfall on mountain roads.

Fuel and parking
Fuel stations are spaced every 20–70 km along the coast and main roads — rarer in the mountains, so fill up before heading to Durmitor or Lovćen. Most stations are full-service — an attendant fills your tank. Expect around €1.40–1.60 per liter for gasoline. Montenegro uses the euro.
Paid parking operates in Budva, Kotor, and Tivat during summer — about €1/hour in coastal towns. Elsewhere, parking is mostly free. In Kotor Old Town, use the paid lot outside the walls — there's no parking inside. The closer to tourist attractions, the harder it is to find a spot in July–August.
Insurance options on TakeCars

Most owners in 2026 offer free delivery to Tivat Airport (TIV). Some charge a small fee for late-night or early-morning pickups. The delivery cost is always shown on the listing before you book — no surprises.
