A hire car works best on routes that link more than one place. Drives along the Mediterranean coast, day trips to Cappadocia or Pamukkale, transfers between Aegean and Mediterranean resorts — on those journeys, your own vehicle is noticeably faster and calmer than coaches, taxis or shared shuttles.
The benefit is most pronounced on longer distances, with children, with luggage or with larger groups. Minivans are a popular choice in Turkey for exactly this reason: two families or a group of friends will often hire one to cover the coast together or reach Cappadocia from the south.

Každoročně navštěvujeme Turecko a pobýváme v Kemeru. Téměř vždy si půjčujeme auto, buď na celou dovolenou, nebo na několik dní, abychom navštívili památky. A nyní opět nastalo dilema, jak auto rezervovat - hned na letišti, nebo v Kemer, kde je cena obvykle minimálně o 50 %, nebo i 2× dražší. Tentokrát jsme plánovali cestu autem do oblasti Izmiru, a to na 4 dny, a v případě půjčení na letišti by doba pronájmu byla 7 dní, protože jsme chtěli po příletu do Izmiru za pár dní vyrazit. Na obvyklých stránkách, kde jsem rezervoval dříve, jsem se stále potýkal s tím, že téměř všechna auta byla s omezením počtu ujetých kilometrů - od 150 do 250 km za den a výše zálohy byla poměrně vysoká. A to nám nevyhovovalo. A teď, v jedné z recenzí jsem viděl nové stránky takecars. A ukázalo se, že částka za dodání vozu do Kemeru je přiměřená, záloha je 100 dolarů, výběr vozů je velmi atraktivní. Nakonec jsem se rozhodl pro Fiat Egea Multijet automat. V den pronájmu jsme si s pronajímatelem vozu napsali na WhatsApp, auto bylo přivezeno o hodinu dříve, nakonec jsme zvýšili třídu - dostali jsme Toyotu Corollu hybridní automat. Celý proces trval doslova 3 minuty. Skvělé auto, asi nejlepší z těch, které jsme si předtím půjčili. Za 4 dny jsme si pro auto také přijeli a během 2 minut bylo předáno. Celkově jsme byli s vozem velmi spokojeni, stejně jako s jednoduchostí registrace a cenou - ve všech ohledech můžeme směle udělit 5 bodů z 5.

Změnili jsme čas odletu. Pravděpodobně z tohoto důvodu jsem místo benzinového vozu z roku 2022 dostal poměrně starý dieselový vůz. Byl jsem s rodinou, manželka a dcera byly po letu unavené a nejstarší dcera na nás v Antalyi čekala už více než den. Proto jsem v naději, že auto je technicky v pořádku, netrval na výměně a přijal to, co mi bylo poskytnuto. Bohužel to bylo špatně. Ukázalo se, že vůz je technicky vadný. Hned první den, cestou z Antalye do Fethiye, jsem si všiml, že se motor v táhlých stoupáních zahřívá. Nevěnoval jsem tomu velkou pozornost - myslel jsem si, že je to zvláštnost dieselových motorů. Ve Fethiye jsme nejezdili dlouhé trasy, takže jsme nepociťovali žádné nepříjemnosti, kromě toho, že auto bylo staré a celé otlučené, poškrábané a nijak zvlášť reprezentativní. Před návratem jsme se rozhodli strávit jeden den ve městě Kash. A cestou z Kaše do Antalye jsme se ocitli ve velmi nepříjemné situaci. Teď už chápu, že jsme dostali auto s vadným chladicím systémem a nemrznoucí směs prostě vytékala, když se auto pohnulo "čelem" nahoru. V Kaši nejsou téměř žádné rovné ulice - auto bylo zaparkované přes noc na kopci - přes noc asi hodně vyteklo. A zbytky chladicí kapaliny při jízdě po serpentinách došly u města Finike, kde jsme stáli s přehřátým motorem. Představte si náš stav: je 10.00, nejstarší dcera má odlet ve 14.00, my jsme na rozbitém autě v neturistickém místě, kde nikdo nemluví anglicky. Zástupce půjčovny se neozývá. Dceru musím poslat na letiště taxíkem (a to není levné potěšení - myslím, že dala něco kolem 100 eur). A my nevíme, co máme dělat. No pomohl nějaký místní Turek - pobídl a pomohl koupit nemrznoucí směs. Pak jsem doplnil vodu celou cestu k jízdě. Zástupce společnosti, který převzal auto, hrubým způsobem odmítl kompenzovat jakékoli výdaje s tím, že jsme auto rozbili, což není pravda. Mám video - v jakém stavu jsme ho převzali - žádné nové poškození tam nebylo. A samotná podstata závady říká, že je to způsobeno špatným technickým stavem - můžete poškodit spodní část a pak by se vylila veškerá chladící kapalina. A protože by za normálních podmínek část kapaliny v systému zůstala, je poškození někde uvnitř. A to ne kvůli mému jednání, ale kvůli opotřebení a nedostatečné údržbě. Celkově vzato - nikomu konkrétnímu to nedoporučuji. Druhý den jsem měl odlet, takže jsem mohl toto auto vrátit v Antalyi. Kdybychom všichni odlétali ve stejnou dobu, musel bych ho nechat tak, jak je. Nedokážu si představit, jaké by to pro mě mělo následky.

Jak už to tak bývá, Clio nebylo skladem, nejprve mi nabídli auto s manuálem, odmítl jsem, omluvili se. Jsou tři hodiny ráno, nedá se poznat, v jaké čtvrti. Řekli, že zůstala jen jedna varianta Corolly, ale cena je o 300 dolarů dražší, nedali mi na výběr. Druhý den se ukázalo, že se mají měnit brzdové destičky, napsal jsem jim, prý až po umytí auta 😄, tak jsem jezdil 19 dní a rachotil. Ale vše je v pořádku 😄

Each car listing shows the actual vehicle: real photographs, year, condition, reviews from previous clients and the specific terms from that owner. It removes the most common worry — that the car turning up won't quite match the picture.
What's worth knowing before the trip
Turkey works logically as a rental market, but it has a few peculiarities of its own — the toll system, insurance fine print, parking and winter rules. If you're across these before booking, the rest tends to fall into place.
Toll roads and the HGS system
Toll roads, bridges and certain tunnels in Turkey are managed through HGS (Hızlı Geçiş Sistemi) — a fully electronic system. A chip sticker is already mounted on the windscreen of nearly every hire car; at toll points, you simply slow down slightly and the charge is deducted automatically. Cash booths and barriers don't exist for this anymore.
"We always run through how HGS charges are calculated when handing over the car, and at what point they appear in the final invoice. That settles most questions before they arise."
The total for tolls is typically added as a single line on the final invoice at the end of the rental. A small administrative handling fee from the supplier is normal practice on the local market.
Insurance — what's included and what isn't
Third Party Liability (TPL) is included in every Turkish rental by law. Basic Comprehensive cover (CDW) is usually included as well, but it carries an excess and has standard exclusions: glass, tyres, wheels, the underside and the interior are typically not covered. For mountain routes and dense city driving, it's worth taking Super coverage (SCDW) or Full coverage (FDW), which closes those gaps.
"Full coverage only works when the rental terms are followed. If the named driver is at the wheel, the route is permitted, and the incident is reported correctly, there are no financial surprises. Where the contract is broken, coverage may apply only partially."
A note on alcohol. The legal limit in Turkey is 0.5‰, but it drops to zero if there is any passenger in the car — meaning the driver effectively has to be entirely sober. Anything above the limit voids any insurance policy, including Full coverage and Super coverage.
Fuel, fines and parking
Both petrol and diesel are common in Turkey. Diesel tends to be cheaper to run and pulls better on long drives and mountain routes, which is why it's frequently chosen for cross-country trips. Petrol stations are open round the clock; major ones take cards, smaller rural stations are often cash-only.
Turkish traffic enforcement is strict — motorways carry plenty of fixed and average-speed cameras. The good news: paying a fine on the spot earns a 25% discount, and paying within 15 days online or through PTT earns a further 25%.

Winter trips and mountain routes
For trips into the eastern provinces or the mountains — Erzurum, Kars, the Taurus range, the ski resorts — winter tyres and overall vehicle setup are worth confirming with the supplier in advance. Winter tyres do most of the work; chains are kept as a backup for heavy snow and difficult sections rather than a substitute for tyres. Cars set up for winter are booked first, so plan ahead.

When to book
There isn't a single peak season across Turkey. Istanbul fills up in spring and around long weekends. The Mediterranean coast peaks through summer and into early autumn. Mountain and ski regions are busiest in winter. Minivans and one-way rentals between cities run out earliest, so for those, booking well ahead is sensible. In quieter months the choice is wider and rates noticeably softer.
