Why rent a car in Georgia

Public transport in Georgia is limited outside Tbilisi, and taxis between cities get expensive fast. A rental car is the easiest way to reach mountain villages, wine regions, and Black Sea beaches on your own schedule.

TakeCars connects you directly with verified local car owners across Georgia. Every listing shows real photos, and the price you see includes insurance, delivery, and all taxes — locked in before you book.

What travelers actually do with their rental cars

  • Piotr 🇵🇱 drove from Kutaisi via Borjomi and Yerevan to the Iranian border, then back through Sevan, Tbilisi, and Gori. 1,500 km in 3 days. "It's not the same distance like in flat Europe, full of motorways."
  • Maciej 🇵🇱 rented a 4x4 for two weeks. Drove to Ushguli, Omalo, and Vashlovani — all off-road, no problems. The owner gave him a SIM card and a gas cartridge on arrival.
  • Virginie 🇳🇱 went from sunny Kutaisi to snow and ice near Mestia. "The car took us everywhere without any problems."
  • Anant 🇹🇭 spent 10 days road-tripping in a Subaru Forester with photography gear. "The car was unexpectedly large enough for all the stuff we had to carry."
  • Michal 🇨🇿 took a Jeep Renegade to the mountains in winter. Discovered you need AWD just to park at some hotels. "If it snows or you want to explore the area, forget about it with a regular car."
  • Max 🇵🇱 did Kutaisi–Martvili–Mestia–Ushguli–Tbilisi in 4 days. Over 1,000 km in a Mitsubishi Outlander. No issues.

Where to rent

Georgia's main tourist routes connect three hubs: Tbilisi in the east, Kutaisi in the center, and Batumi on the Black Sea coast.

Most visitors pick up at one of three airports — Tbilisi Airport (TBS), Kutaisi Airport (KUT), or Batumi Airport (BUS) — or in the city center. One-way rentals between cities are available from many owners on TakeCars.

Pick up at the airport, in the city, or at your hotel

In general, everything went well. We did not receive Lexus GX, which was in the order, but we were given a Toyota Sequoia at no extra charge. The car is in good condition, although the tailgate did not work well. The car allowed us to travel well and not be afraid to move off the asphalt where it was needed. Special thanks to Irakli. He was very responsive and polite. Next time will use the services.

Nissan X-Trail in Georgia

This will be a long story but probably worth to read it. We rented a Nissa X-Trail for a week in Tbilisi. We picked up the car straight from the airport. After we checked everything we told the person that brought the car that something is wrong with the oil but he said everything is fine. Then we realised that the WIFI we payed for is not in the car. After many calls they told us to go to the city centre and they'll bring it asap. That's what we did but in the end we were waiting over 5 hours for that. So our first day in Georgia was lost. We started the journey the next day. The car drove good besides some engine sounds good. We told the manager that we think something is wrong with the engine and again we were told everything is fine so we continued driving. When we were in Telavi (around 2h from Tbilisi) the car didn't start anymore so we had to go to a work shop. The guys told us after a diagnose that they'll need 2 days to repair it. We contacted the manager and she said they will repair it the same day and we should just wait there. So we waited over 3 hours until they told us again that we'll not get the car back. Then we had to convince the manager to bring us a new car. We had to walk with all our luggage back to the city centre and were told a new car will come in about 2 hours. After waiting over 6 hours the new car arrived at 9.30 p.m.. No one was telling us during the day what is going on and that it will take way longer. So we lost another day. The new car was a Pajero in worse condition than the one we had before. It was way smaller, less HP and more used. Again we told the manager about it and that it would be just fair to give us a discount. She was avoiding us so we needed to find another person to talk about this issues. The boss agreed that we'll get back 150GEL once we bring the car to the airport. The guy taking the car just had 100GEL and refused to give us more. After long discussion we agreed on something. Georgia is a beautiful country with amazing people. The experiences we made with this car rental were very disappointing. It's normal that there can be a problem but the way it was handled and we were treated as customers was very unprofessional.

Mercedes-Benz B-Class in Georgia

The technical condition of the car 6/10. The right rear light is broken, taped with adhesive tape, the right brake light did not work, as the on-board computer reported all the time. In addition, the computer all the time reported on the failure (or uncalibration) of the tire pressure sensor and the need for maintenance 86tys. km back. The cabin is clean, there is no smell, the air conditioner was working properly, the passenger detection sensor is faulty in the front passenger seat - when the seat was empty it still signaled that the passenger was not fastened, I had to fasten the belt from scratch so that the squeak did not interfere. At engine speeds above 2500 rpm, the machine vibrated noticeably, the vibration was transmitted to the pedals, but perhaps this is a feature of the model, and not its separate copy. Very upset by the company's fuel policy. Despite the full / full policy stated on the website, the car was given with an almost empty tank, a light bulb was on. The owner commented on this situation that "it is written there on the site, and here it is here" and said where the nearest gas station is. But the fuel level was honestly fixed in the act of receiving a car almost at zero. Since I didn’t know if the stated consumption coincides with the real one and how much fuel will be needed for the planned route, I had to fill a full tank, which cost 142 GEL. When you return the car, a little more than half the tank remains, i.e. about 70 GEL fuel, which I did not compensate. With a total rental cost of 210 GEL, an overpayment of more than 30% came out. Also in the tank there was no washing liquid at all, but the sensor did not show it - apparently, it was also faulty. I had to drive for a while with dirty glass, until we got to the gas station, where we bought the washing liquid for 5 GEL, which, when returning the car, had almost a full tank. The provided child car seat was an unidentified manufacturer, of course, without any certificates (I didn’t even ask them), but the worst thing was that there was no instructions on how to properly secure the chair, the owner didn’t know how to attach it, or find instructions on the Internet It was possible because of the complete absence of any mention of the manufacturer or model on the chair. Secure at your own risk. We managed to drive along the planned route, the car did it, but I cannot recommend this rental company.

Traveler with rental car in the mountains of Georgia
  • 💰 No hidden fees

The price you see includes insurance, delivery, and taxes. Everything is locked in before you book. No surprises at pickup, no extra charges at return.

  • 📍 Flexible pickup

Your owner delivers the car to the airport, your hotel, or anywhere in Georgia. Flight delayed? They'll wait. Need to change the time? A WhatsApp message is enough.

  • 🕐 24/7 support

Our team speaks English and is available around the clock. If anything comes up — a breakdown, a parking fine, a route question — you're not on your own.

What you should know before driving

🅿️ Download the parking app before you drive in Tbilisi. You'll get fined or towed if you don't pay through the app. One renter couldn't figure it out — his owner drove over and sorted the tickets himself.

📸 Watch out for speed cameras. They're everywhere on main highways, and fines are issued automatically. Andrej 🇨🇿 picked up two fines in 16 days — one for an illegal turn (20 GEL) and one for speeding (50 GEL). You may not even know until you return the car.

🛞 Check your tires before you leave. This is the most common issue in winter. Mismatched tires, worn tread, bald rubber on mountain roads — it all comes up. If you're heading to Mestia or Gudauri, inspect the tires at pickup and ask the owner to swap them if needed.

📍 Download offline maps. Google Maps and Maps.me don't always work well in Georgia — wrong pins, missing roads. Save your route offline and confirm the pickup point with your owner on WhatsApp before you land.

🚗 Pick the right car for your route. Going to Tusheti? You need a real 4x4 with low range — a Subaru won't cut it. Staying on highways between Tbilisi and Batumi? A Prius will save you a fortune on fuel. Heading to Svaneti on gravel roads? They're brutal, but a proper 4x4 handles them fine.

What owners have done for renters

This is the part that surprises most first-time renters on TakeCars. You're not dealing with a counter — you're dealing with a person.

  • Elizaveta 🇷🇺 — her owner helped her get a SIM card and find a bank on day one.
  • Henry 🇩🇪 — got stuck in Mestia due to a rockslide. His owner called the road department multiple times to keep him updated.
  • Azlam 🇦🇪 — couldn't download the Tbilisi parking app. His owner drove over and sorted the tickets.
  • Andrej 🇨🇿 — his owner helped him pay traffic fines at Kutaisi Airport minutes before his flight.
  • Ivan 🇨🇾 — his owner met him at 4 AM at the airport for the return.
  • Pablo 🇩🇪 — his owner helped pay the city parking fee through the local app.

Driving basics

Georgia drives on the right. Speed limits: 60 km/h in cities, 90 km/h on open roads, 110 km/h on highways. Blood alcohol limit is 0.03% — effectively zero tolerance.

Main roads between major cities are in good condition. Mountain roads (Gudauri, Mestia, Stepantsminda) are paved but narrow with sharp turns — keep headlights on. Winter tires are mandatory on mountain passes from December 1 through March 1.

"The road to Kazbegi is beautiful but busy in summer. I always tell my renters to leave Tbilisi early in the morning to avoid the traffic and catch the best light at Gergeti Trinity Church." — Georgy, car owner

Fuel and parking

Fuel stations are plentiful along main routes. Stick to Wissol, Gulf, or Socar for consistent quality. Most are full-service — an attendant fills your tank. Expect around 3.0–3.5 GEL per liter for gasoline.

Paid parking operates in Tbilisi, Batumi, and Kutaisi through city parking apps. Everywhere else, parking is free.

Insurance options on TakeCars

Every car comes with Third Party Liability at no extra cost. For broader protection:

  • Collision Damage Waiver — covers damage to the rental car, excluding windscreen, tires, and underside.
  • Super Collision Damage Waiver — covers all damage including windscreen, wheels, and undercarriage.
  • Full Damage Waiver — zero liability. The most comprehensive option.

Cars with Collision Damage Waiver or higher typically require no deposit — look for the "Zero Deposit" label in listings.

How much is renting a car in Georgia?

Car rental prices in Georgia follow a clear seasonal pattern. Winter (January–March) offers the lowest rates — good for ski trips to Gudauri or Bakuriani. Prices climb from May through August as tourism peaks, especially in July–August when Batumi and the mountain regions are busiest. September–October (wine harvest in Kakheti) stays busy but slightly cheaper than midsummer.

Book 2–4 weeks ahead to save 10–15%, especially in high season when popular models sell out.

Economy cars (Kia Picanto, Toyota Yaris) start from around ₾65/day. SUVs and crossovers run ₾90–150/day. Rentals of 7+ days bring the daily rate down. Andrej 🇨🇿 rented a Prius Hybrid for 16 days in July — about $27/day including delivery from Tbilisi to Kutaisi Airport.

Is airport pickup free in Tbilisi?

Many car owners offer free delivery to Tbilisi Airport (TBS). Delivery fees, if any, are shown on each listing — typically ₾0–₾40 for Tbilisi airport pickup. Kutaisi (KUT) and Batumi (BUS) airport pickups are also available. Reviewers consistently praise owners for waiting even when flights are delayed — one owner drove from Tbilisi to Kutaisi airport at no extra charge.

Can I pick up in one city and drop off in another?

Yes, many suppliers offer one-way rentals between Georgian cities. This is especially popular for travelers flying into Kutaisi (Wizz Air) and departing from Tbilisi, or vice versa. A one-way delivery fee may apply — check the listing or message the owner.

What deposit options are available for car rentals in Georgia?

Deposit policies vary by owner. Many cars on TakeCars are listed with zero deposit — look for the "Deposit ₾0" label. When a deposit is required, it's typically ₾500–₾2,000 depending on the car class, paid in cash at pickup and fully refunded on return. Always photograph the car before and after your rental to avoid disputes — this is the single most useful tip from our reviewers.

Is it safe to drive in Georgia?

Georgian highways are well-maintained, and most travelers have no issues. The main challenges mentioned in reviews are aggressive local driving habits, livestock wandering onto rural roads, and narrow mountain passes. Drive defensively, keep headlights on, and avoid mountain roads at night. Over 80% of our renters in Georgia rated their experience 5 out of 5.

What's included in the rental price on TakeCars?

The listed price includes the car, basic TPL insurance, and agreed mileage (usually unlimited). Delivery fees, additional insurance (CDW/SCDW/FDW), child seats, and GPS are shown separately so you see the full cost before booking. Multiple reviewers specifically praise the transparent pricing with no surprise charges at pickup.

Can I add a second driver to my rental in Georgia?

Yes, most owners allow a second driver. The additional driver must meet the same age and license requirements. Some owners include a second driver for free; others charge a small daily fee. Check the listing or ask the owner before booking.

Do I need an international driving license to rent a car in Georgia?

No. Georgia accepts any valid driver's license printed in Latin characters. If your license uses Cyrillic, Arabic, or other non-Latin scripts, you'll need an International Driving Permit (IDP) alongside it. Several of our renters from the UAE and Thailand confirmed they had no issues with their home country licenses.

Do I need a 4x4 / SUV to drive in Georgia?

For Tbilisi, Batumi, Kutaisi, Kakheti, and the Georgian Military Highway, a standard sedan or crossover is fine. One customer explored all of Georgia for 16 days in a Toyota Prius Hybrid with no trouble. An SUV is recommended for winter mountain trips or remote areas like upper Svaneti — travelers who went to Ushguli, Omalo, and Vashlovani specifically praise having a proper 4x4.

How old do I need to be to rent a car in Georgia?

Most cars require drivers to be at least 21 with 2+ years of experience. Some economy vehicles are available from age 19. Each listing shows the exact age requirement — use the filters to find cars matching your age and experience level.

When is the best time to rent a car in Georgia?

January–March for the lowest prices and ski access (Gudauri, Bakuriani). May–June and September–October for the best weather and moderate pricing — September and October are especially popular for Kakheti wine harvest trips. July–August is peak season with highest prices but ideal for the coast and mountains. Book 2–4 weeks ahead in summer — popular models sell out fast.

Do rental cars in Georgia come with winter tires?

Winter tires are mandatory on mountain passes from December 1 to March 1. If you're renting during winter months, confirm with the owner that the car is equipped. Several winter reviewers specifically mention checking tire condition — bald or worn tires on mountain roads are the most common complaint in negative reviews. Don't be afraid to ask for photos of the tires before you arrive.

Can I drive a rental car from Georgia to Armenia or Azerbaijan?

Most suppliers do not allow cross-border travel by default. However, some owners can arrange permission with advance notice — one of our customers drove from Kutaisi through Borjomi and Giumri all the way to Goris in Armenia, covering 1,500 km. Ask the owner through the messaging system before booking. Driving to Turkey or Russia is not permitted.

Can I pay in USD or EUR, or only Georgian Lari?

TakeCars accepts prepayment by card in multiple currencies. The remaining balance at pickup is typically paid in Georgian Lari (GEL). Some owners also accept USD or EUR in cash, but confirm before your trip. ATMs dispensing GEL are widely available at all Georgian airports.

What are the speed limits in Georgia?

60 km/h in cities, 90 km/h outside urban areas, 110 km/h on highways. Speed cameras are active on major routes. One renter reported getting fined 50 GEL for speeding and 20 GEL for an illegal turn — fines are issued automatically and deducted from your deposit, so watch the signs carefully.

Where can't I drive a rental car in Georgia?

South Ossetia and Abkhazia are off-limits — insurance is void in these territories. The Ushguli–Lentekhi road requires special authorization. Roads to Tusheti, Truso valley, and parts of Shatili may be restricted depending on the vehicle. Reviewers confirm that owners clearly communicate restricted routes at pickup — take these warnings seriously, as insurance won't cover damage on unauthorized roads.

How does fuel work in Georgia?

Stations are full-service — an attendant fills your tank. Major chains (Wissol, Gulf, Socar) are reliable. Gasoline costs about 3.0–3.5 GEL per liter. Most stations accept cards, but carry some cash for rural areas. One reviewer noted fuel consumption of around 10L/100km in a loaded Subaru Forester on mountain roads with 4x4 engaged — useful for budgeting longer trips.

What guarantees does TakeCars provide?

Every rental is backed by a written contract between you and the car owner. We verify all suppliers before they can list on the platform — those not meeting our standards are removed. If a confirmed booking falls through due to a supplier issue, our support team will arrange an alternative vehicle or process a full refund.

What happens if the car breaks down?

Contact the car owner first — their number is in your booking details. TakeCars support is also available 24/7 via chat, WhatsApp, and Telegram. In most reviewed cases, owners arranged a replacement vehicle within hours. One renter in Sweden praised getting help even when they were far from Tbilisi. For peace of mind, save the owner's number and support contacts before you start driving.
