Car rental in Dalaman turns DLM into your gateway to the south-west coast. Distances run short and the resort towns sit close: Sarıgerme 12 km, Göcek 25, Dalyan 25, Fethiye 50, Ölüdeniz 65, Marmaris 95, Kalkan 125, Kaş 150. Dalaman itself is a quiet inland town, so almost every arrival walks out and drives somewhere else.

Nine in ten DLM guests pick up a car simply to leave the airport behind. Even the package charters walk straight out and head for the coast.

DLM is the main charter airport on the Turkish south-west: Jet2, TUI and easyJet from April through October, peaking in July–August. From November to March most local operators close; international chains stay open with reduced fleets.

Dalaman in winter is a different place. Charters stop, resorts shut, prices drop 30–50%. Take a slightly larger car — the south-west sees rain in winter.

Cardinal rule of DLM: at the chain desks expect upsell attempts and a thorough damage check. With local operators booked through aggregators, the handover is calmer.

Where DLM takes you

DLM is the only international airport on the south-west coast. Distances run from 12 to 150 km.

Close by (under an hour)

Sarıgerme — 12 km / 15 minutes (quiet beach). Göcek — 25 km / 25 minutes (marinas). Dalyan — 25 km / 30 minutes (turtles and mud baths). Fethiye — 50 km / 50 minutes (the main town). Saklıkent — 60 km.

A family booked an automatic at the meet-and-greet point at 10:40, were on the D400 to Ölüdeniz by 11:05, and dropped suitcases at Belcekiz before lunch. On the way back to DLM a week later, they stopped in Dalyan for the turtles.

Further down the coast

Ölüdeniz — 65 km / 1 hour (the headline beach). Marmaris — 95 km / 1.5 hours (mass package crowd). Kalkan — 125 km (boutique hotels). Kaş — 150 km / 2 hours (fishing-village feel).

A couple landed at DLM, drove a week along the coast — Fethiye, Ölüdeniz, Kalkan, Kaş — and dropped the car at Antalya. About 300 km on the D400, paid €120 for the one-way.

A car is hard to skip

There is no rail link from DLM and public transport is limited. Without a hire car you're on transfers or taxis. Most guests pick up at least for a couple of days. Even on an all-inclusive in Hisarönü, two or three days of hire for Saklıkent and Ölüdeniz pays back against one taxi day.

Turkey with locals

The Lycian Way from DLM

Of all the Turkish airports, DLM is the best starting point for the classic Lycian coast road trip. About 300 km to Antalya, usually over 5–7 days with stops. One-way at AYT runs €80–180.

A standard week: DLM → Fethiye (Saklıkent) → Ölüdeniz (paragliding) → Kalkan (sunset on a terrace) → Kaş (Greek islands on the horizon) → Demre (St Nicholas's Church) → Olympos (the Chimaera flames) → Antalya (Kaleiçi old town). One or two hours behind the wheel each day, the rest at the sights and beaches.

5–7 days is the sweet spot. Fewer and the Lycian Way turns into a race; more and you're tired of repacking the cases every other evening.

Take a compact or mid-range with an automatic. The D400 has switchbacks, long climbs and hairpin bends — a manual in the Taurus tires the clutch leg. The toughest stretches are Kalkan–Kaş, Kaş–Demre and Olympos–Antalya.

A guest tried the Lycian Way on a manual Clio one August. Halfway up the Kaş–Demre climb the clutch was smoking and they pulled over at a roadside köfte place to cool. Next trip — automatic.

Why guests book through us

RENT A CAR
  • Protection against scratch disputes at return

The car is filmed at pickup and at return — no surprise invoice for a "newly found" scratch. At DLM in particular this matters: the complaint rate runs higher here than at Antalya or Bodrum.

  • Delivery to Fethiye, Ölüdeniz, Marmaris or Sarıgerme

The car comes to your hotel reception, no shuttle and no return run to DLM.

  • One-way to Antalya (AYT) for the Lycian Way

End the road trip at AYT for €80–180 depending on supplier — worth booking ahead.

Handling the return at DLM

Dalaman has a forum reputation for return-day surprises. The reality is calmer than the threads suggest, but it pays to come prepared. A few simple steps cut the risk to almost zero.

At pickup

Photograph the car on every side, with location and timestamp on: four sides of the body, wheels, bumpers, glass, undercarriage, interior, the dashboard with the fuel gauge. Existing damage goes on the inspection sheet before you drive off. Don't sign without a full walk-around.

A guest took thirty timestamped photos at the DLM meet-and-greet point — both sides, both bumpers, all four wheels, the dashboard. At return the agent spotted a small scuff near the rear wheel, the guest pulled up the matching pickup shot, and the inspection sheet stayed clean.

At return and the fuel question

Bring the car back in daylight and don't rush. Take the same photos again. A Full-to-Full contract is fairer than Full-to-Empty: photograph the fuel gauge at pickup. If the contract says a full tank but the car is at three-quarters, ask for the contract to be corrected before driving off. Refuel at the Opet station five minutes from DLM on the road from Sarıgerme.

A third-party excess waiver policy is the safety net. The hire firm holds the deposit, you settle the dispute with them, then claim back through your own policy.

Frequent Questions

How far is Fethiye, Ölüdeniz and Marmaris from DLM?

DLM is the only international airport on the south-west coast. Sarıgerme — 12 km / 15 minutes. Göcek — 25 km / 25 minutes. Dalyan — 25 km / 30 minutes. Fethiye — 50 km / 50 minutes. Saklıkent — 60 km. Ölüdeniz — 65 km / 1 hour. Marmaris — 95 km / 1.5 hours. Kalkan — 125 km. Kaş — 150 km / 2 hours.

On-airport or off-airport at Dalaman — which is right?

On-airport (international chains) — desks in the terminal, paperwork in 15–20 minutes, prices 20–40% higher. Off-airport (several local operators just outside the perimeter) — 5–10 minutes by shuttle, cheaper, but the whole pickup takes 30–60 minutes longer. For a first-time arrival or with children — on-airport. For experienced travellers and savings — off-airport.

Can I have the car delivered to Fethiye, Ölüdeniz or Sarıgerme?

Yes — most local suppliers and some chains deliver across the south-west coast. Sarıgerme (12 km) is usually free. Fethiye, Ölüdeniz, Göcek and Dalyan run €0–20 by distance. Marmaris, Kalkan and Kaş €20–60. Local suppliers handle delivery and meet & greet at DLM.

Can I do a one-way DLM to Antalya (AYT)?

Yes — it's the classic Lycian Way ending. DLM → AYT typically runs €80–180 depending on supplier and season. Book ahead: cars with this option get cleared 4–6 weeks out in summer. Standard 5–7 day route via Fethiye, Kalkan, Kaş, Demre and Olympos. Around 300 km on the D400.

Can I pick up at Fethiye or Marmaris and return at DLM?

Yes. Fethiye → DLM is usually free or €0–20 (same Muğla province). Marmaris → DLM €15–40. A useful pattern: a tour transfer to the hotel on arrival day, then 2–3 days of car hire for Saklıkent and Ölüdeniz, returning at DLM on the day of departure. Book in advance with a local via an aggregator.

Can I take a hire car on the Marmaris–Rhodes ferry?

No — the Marmaris–Rhodes catamarans have no car decks, foot passengers only. Hire-car insurance is also void in Greece. The workflow: drive to Marmaris (95 km / 1.5 h from DLM), park at the port (~₺100–150/day), walk onto the ferry — €60 day-trip ticket, departs 09:15 and returns 16:00.

How much does car hire at DLM cost?

Per industry aggregators March–April 2026: economy $24–30/day, compact $26–35, SUV from $38. Small cars average around $24/day across DLM's 100+ operators. November is the cheapest month at about $27/day. The summer peak in July–August (UK school holidays) runs 30–50% above. Booking 5+ weeks ahead gives below-average prices.

When should I book a Dalaman hire car?

Five weeks or more before pickup gives the best rates. For the summer peak (July–August) book in February–March: automatics and SUVs go first. Last-minute in summer pays 30–50% more. In winter (November–March) 1–2 weeks is enough, though there are also fewer operators in service.

Does car hire at DLM run year-round?

International chains operate year-round with reduced fleets. Most local operators close from November to March: charter flights (Jet2, TUI, easyJet) stop and the resorts in Hisarönü, Ölüdeniz and Çalış close down. Winter prices run 30–50% below summer. Hotel delivery to resort areas is more limited off-season.

How do I avoid scratch disputes at return at Dalaman?

Photograph the car on every side at pickup with location and timestamp on: four sides, wheels, bumpers, glass, undercarriage, interior, fuel gauge. Existing damage goes on the inspection sheet before you drive off. At return, take the same photos again. A third-party excess waiver covers any excess if a dispute does come up.

What if the desk staff offer extra insurance at Dalaman?

The desk often suggests "full insurance" for £40–80 — that's an additional SCDW on top of your booking. If you've already got a third-party excess waiver policy, show it on your phone and politely decline. The basic CDW in your contract is what's actually required.

Is a third-party excess waiver worth it for DLM?

For Dalaman, yes — UK travellers consider it standard. An annual third-party excess waiver policy runs about £40; the equivalent at the desk costs £15+ a day. It covers any excess for scratches, glass, tyres or wheels. The hire firm draws on the deposit, and you reclaim through your own policy.

Which class of car is best for the Lycian Way?

A compact or mid-range with an automatic. The D400 west of Kemer has many switchbacks and hairpin bends, and a manual tires the clutch leg. The toughest stretches are Kalkan–Kaş, Kaş–Demre and Olympos–Antalya. For a couple — Renault Clio, Hyundai i20 (from $25/day). For a family of four — Toyota Corolla, Hyundai Elantra ($30–45). An SUV isn't needed.

Is there a petrol station near DLM for refuelling on return?

Yes — there's an Opet station five minutes from DLM along the road from Fethiye/Sarıgerme, visible from the road. Prices are standard Turkish — about ₺55 per litre of 95 unleaded. Keep the receipt until you've returned the car — some operators check that the fill-up was a recent one. A Full-to-Full contract is fairer than Full-to-Empty.

Can I do a one-way from DLM to Bodrum or Izmir?

Yes. DLM → Bodrum: €80–150 (~270 km / 4 hours via Marmaris and the coast). DLM → Izmir (ADB): €120–200 (~270 km via the O-31 motorway). DLM → Istanbul: €200–400 (longest cross-region; rarely done as a hire return). Both chains and locals support cross-region one-way; locals are more flexible.
