Dalaman is an unusual case in Turkish car hire. The town itself is small and not really a tourist destination — visitors don't tend to linger. Dalaman airport (DLM) functions instead as a gateway to a whole region of resort towns: Fethiye, Ölüdeniz, Göcek, Sarıgerme, Kalkan, Kaş, Patara. So a hire car in Dalaman isn't 'for Dalaman' — it's for everything around it.
When to book in Dalaman
Dalaman has a strongly seasonal pattern. Most flights into DLM are summer and seasonal services, so car hire here is busiest from May to October. The peak falls in July and August, when cars across multiple categories around Fethiye and Ölüdeniz disappear at once. Winter sees DLM operating on a reduced schedule, and the rental fleet contracts in step. So for a summer trip it's worth booking the car at the same time as the flight — that locks in both the class and the rate.
What to keep in mind on the road
Roads around Dalaman are mostly of good quality, but a lot of them wind through wooded hills and along the coast. The Fethiye to Kaş to Kalkan stretches frequently bring narrow turns with limited visibility, and not every section is safe to overtake. A relaxed pace works better than a fast one here.
"On the Kaş–Kalkan–Patara coast we suggest not relying on Google Maps for the journey time. The road is beautiful but no-one would call it fast — overtakes aren't everywhere, the views are distracting, and stops happen more often."
Around Ölüdeniz, paragliding adds another layer to the road. Landing zones run alongside the beach, and pilots come down close to the road. On those stretches, drive steadily and be ready for unexpected pedestrian movement from people carrying folded paragliders.
For accidents — don't move the vehicle, take photographs, contact the rental supplier and call 112 if needed. A police report is required in Turkey for almost every incident.

Airport meet at DLM
The supplier meets you at the exit or at the nearby parking. No shuttles or transfers — 30 to 40 minutes from landing to driving out of the airport towards the resort.
-
One-way along the coast
The car can be picked up at DLM and dropped off at Bodrum, Antalya, Izmir or another city. Useful for itineraries that arrive at one airport and depart from another.

Delivery to the resort
From DLM, delivery is possible to Fethiye, Ölüdeniz, Göcek, Sarıgerme or other points in the region. Convenient when a car isn't needed for the first days at the hotel.
Where people drive to from Dalaman, and what to know
The region around Dalaman covers a wide spread of holiday formats: beach stays, trekking, paragliding, ancient ruins, long coastal drives. Understanding the distances and the character of the roads helps the trip plan accurately.
Resorts within the hour
Göcek, Sarıgerme and Fethiye are the three closest points, anywhere from 25 minutes to an hour from DLM. Göcek is a quiet marina, Sarıgerme a beachside village, Fethiye the main town for activities of all kinds. So if the base is Fethiye or Ölüdeniz, the car is almost always collected at the airport.
"From Dalaman we have two main directions — Fethiye and Ölüdeniz. It's exactly the case where a car saves the traveller an hour and a half on a transfer in the first day, and gives the route flexibility from the start."
The Kaş, Kalkan and Patara runs
East from Fethiye runs one of the most scenic stretches in Turkey. Kalkan is around an hour, Kaş an hour and a half, Patara (with its endless sand beach) around two hours. The road is high quality but partly winding, with climbs and viewpoints. It's a 'there and back' day trip or a format with an overnight in Kaş.
Parking around the resorts
In most resort towns of the region parking is straightforward. Hotels generally include free parking, and side streets usually have spaces. It gets harder in high season around Fethiye, Çalış beach and Ölüdeniz: arrive earlier in the day, or head straight for a paid car park.
"If a Kaş or Patara day is on the plan, an early start makes a real difference. After midday the oncoming traffic is denser and the parking near the beaches is already taken until evening."
Frequent Questions
Kalkan is about an hour from Fethiye (60 km). Kaş is 1.5 hours (110 km). Patara is 2 hours (130 km). All on the scenic stretch of the D400 with switchbacks and viewpoints. Day trips work best with an early start, before the oncoming traffic gets dense.
About 50 km and 50–60 minutes on a high-quality road. The most common DLM scenario: arrive, collect the car, drive to the hotel in Fethiye or Ölüdeniz. The shuttle transfer with stopovers takes longer and typically costs more than the self-drive option.
About 70 km and 1 hour 10 minutes. The route runs through Fethiye. The road is high quality, no difficult switchbacks. The 'arrive at DLM, take the car, drive to the Ölüdeniz hotel' pattern is the standard route and most of our Ölüdeniz clients use exactly this approach.
Yes — hotel delivery is a much-used service in this region. The car can come from DLM directly to Fethiye, Ölüdeniz, Göcek or Sarıgerme and be collected from the same point at the end of the rental. Convenient when the first days at the hotel don't need a car.
Yes — dropping off in Bodrum, Antalya, Izmir or Istanbul is standard with most suppliers. The relocation fee depends on distance: from $150–200 for Dalaman–Bodrum, from $200–300 for Dalaman–Antalya. Cars with this option go faster in summer, so book ahead.
The paragliding landing zones sit right alongside the beach, and pilots come down within metres of the road. On the beach-adjacent stretches drive steadily and be ready for unexpected pedestrian movement from people carrying folded paragliders. It's a regular part of the local rhythm.
In Dalaman, almost always — yes. It's an unusual airport: the town itself isn't a destination, and most travellers head straight to Fethiye, Ölüdeniz or Kaş. So the car is normally taken for the full trip. The 'one to three days for outings' pattern that works on the Mediterranean coast is rare in Dalaman.
Most resort towns of the region have straightforward parking — hotels include it free, and street spaces are usually available. It gets harder in high season in Fethiye itself, at Çalış beach and in Ölüdeniz: arrive earlier in the day or head straight for a paid car park. Seafront spaces fill up fast.
There are plenty of stations between Fethiye and Kaş, but fewer between Kaş and Patara. Refilling earlier is sensible, particularly if a Patara day starts early. Diesel is usually the more economical choice on this route — lower price per kilometre and lower consumption.
No — a standard compact or saloon with an automatic gearbox is enough for the D400. A crossover is more comfortable on the switchback sections, but on the main coastal stretch the difference isn't critical. A minivan is only needed for a larger group. For Lycian Way trekking, the car stays at the trailhead.
DLM has a strongly seasonal flight pattern — most routes are summer services. Car hire here is busiest from May to October, peaking in July and August. Winter sees DLM operating on a reduced schedule and the rental fleet contracts in step. For summer trips, booking the car alongside the flight locks in stock.
UK guidance recommends carrying an International Driving Permit alongside the domestic licence as a precaution, although it isn't strictly required for short visits. Most UK and EU licences are accepted by Turkish suppliers on their own. Worth carrying for licences in non-Latin scripts.
