Car rental in Dalaman turns DLM into your gateway to the south-west coast. Distances are short and the resort towns are close by: Sarıgerme 12 km, Göcek 25 km, Dalyan 25 km, Fethiye 50 km, Ölüdeniz 65 km, Marmaris 95 km, Kalkan 125 km, Kaş 150 km. Dalaman itself is a quiet inland town, so almost every arrival picks up a car and heads elsewhere.
Nine out of ten DLM guests rent a car simply to get away from the airport. Even package holiday customers walk straight out and head for the coast.
DLM is the main charter airport for Turkey’s south-west coast: Jet2, TUI and easyJet operate from April through October, peaking in July–August. From November to March most local operators close; international chains remain open with reduced fleets.
Dalaman in winter feels different. Charters stop, resorts close and prices drop 30–50%. Consider a slightly larger car — the south-west can see rain in winter.
The cardinal rule at DLM: expect upsell attempts and a thorough damage check at the chain desks. With local operators booked through aggregators, the handover tends to be smoother.
On-airport or off-airport at DLM
One of the key questions at DLM. Terminal desks are quicker but more expensive; off-airport options cost less but add 30–60 minutes for the shuttle transfer.

International chains have desks in arrivals. The car is just steps from the exit and paperwork takes 15–20 minutes. Prices are typically 20–40% higher than off-airport.
On-airport costs more, but the time and peace of mind saved often make up for the difference — especially with children or after a night flight.
Off-airport (5–10 minutes by shuttle)
Several off-airport operators are located just outside the perimeter. The shuttle is free, but the full pickup process takes 30–60 minutes. Prices are 20–40% lower.
Off-airport makes sense for a second trip, not the first. If you already know how DLM works, the saving is worth the extra time.

The Lycian Way from DLM
Of all the Turkish airports, DLM is the best starting point for the classic Lycian coast road trip. It’s about 300 km to Antalya, usually spread over 5–7 days with stops. One-way rentals to AYT cost €80–180.
A typical week looks like this: DLM → Fethiye (Saklıkent) → Ölüdeniz (paragliding) → Kalkan (sunset from a terrace) → Kaş (Greek islands on the horizon) → Demre (St Nicholas’s Church) → Olympos (the Chimaera flames) → Antalya (Kaleiçi old town). One or two hours behind the wheel each day, the rest spent at sights and beaches.
5–7 days is the sweet spot. Fewer and the Lycian Way feels rushed; more and you’re tired of repacking every other evening.
Choose a compact or mid-range automatic. The D400 features switchbacks, long climbs and hairpin bends — driving a manual through the Taurus mountains tires the clutch leg. The toughest stretches are Kalkan–Kaş, Kaş–Demre and Olympos–Antalya.
A guest tried the Lycian Way in a manual Clio one August. Halfway up the Kaş–Demre climb the clutch was smoking, so they pulled over at a roadside köfte place to let it cool. Next trip — automatic.

Handling the return at DLM
Dalaman has a forum reputation for return-day surprises. The reality is calmer than the threads suggest, but it pays to come prepared. A few simple steps reduce the risk to almost zero.
At pickup
Photograph every side of the car, with the location and timestamp visible: four sides of the body, wheels, bumpers, glass, undercarriage, interior, and the dashboard showing the fuel gauge. Record any existing damage on the inspection sheet before driving off. Never sign without completing a full walk-around.
A guest took thirty timestamped photos at the DLM meet-and-greet point — both sides, both bumpers, all four wheels, and the dashboard. At return the agent noticed a small scuff near the rear wheel, but the guest pulled up the matching pickup photo and the inspection sheet stayed clean.
At return and the fuel question
Return the car in daylight and take your time. Take the same photos again. A Full-to-Full contract is fairer than Full-to-Empty: photograph the fuel gauge at pickup. If the contract states a full tank but the car is only at three-quarters, ask for the contract to be corrected before driving off. Refuel at the Opet station five minutes from DLM on the road from Sarıgerme.
A third-party excess waiver policy is the safety net. The hire firm holds the deposit, you settle any dispute with them, then claim reimbursement through your own policy.
