Car hire in Gyumri is the smartest way to head north — straight into Armenia’s Lori region and, if you like, on into northern Georgia. The city rests on the Shirak plateau, 120 km from Yerevan and just 1.5 hours from a calm border crossing. Most guests collect their car here when the trip is focused on Vanadzor, Dilijan, the Debed gorge or the route towards Borjomi, rather than spending extra time in the capital.

Parking throughout Gyumri is free, the historic streets around Vartanants Square and the Black Fortress are perfect for walking, and the car is usually picked up not on arrival day but when you’re actually ready to set off.

"In our experience, for a north-Armenia trip it's easier to take the car in Gyumri rather than driving 240 km out and back from Yerevan."

"The Gyumri fleet is smaller than Yerevan's, but it has everything you need — economy, saloons, crossovers and the Lada Niva, which is one of the local favourites for the mountains."

Shirak Airport (LWN) and arriving from Yerevan

Shirak (LWN) is Armenia’s second international airport, just 7 km west of central Gyumri. The terminal is compact with a single check-in queue, and the 2026 schedule is still modest: Wizz Air to Larnaca in Cyprus is the most reliable European connection, alongside a few weekly flights to Moscow. Most international visitors still fly into Zvartnots (EVN) near Yerevan and reach Gyumri in 1.5–2 hours.

"If your flight lands at Shirak, we meet you at arrivals by flight number. Parking right at the terminal is free, and the ride into the centre takes just 15 minutes."

International rental chains don’t operate at LWN — Sixt, Hertz and Avis are only at Zvartnots. In Gyumri everything comes from trusted local partners. The fleet is more compact than in the capital, but the prices and conditions are very similar. If you fly into Yerevan and want to head north straight away, a one-way Gyumri → Yerevan pickup is easy to arrange after your transfer.

"Most guests find it simpler to fly into Zvartnots and drive up. Shirak’s schedule is still limited, and the connections often cost more than the hour you save."

Yerevan or Gyumri — where to pick up the car

This is the question we hear most often from travellers heading north. If your plans include Khor Virap, Tatev, Syunik or Lake Sevan, collect the car in Yerevan. If you’re focusing on Lori, Vanadzor, Dilijan, Akhtala monastery, the Debed gorge or a quick hop into northern Georgia, it makes much more sense to drive up to Gyumri and start your rental there.

Why it matters

Gyumri lies on the M1, 120 km from Yerevan and only 70 km from the quiet Bavra border crossing into Georgia. Leaving from Yerevan means an extra 240 km of empty driving there and back. From Gyumri everything sits further north: Vanadzor in an hour, Spitak in an hour, Georgia in an hour and a half.

"For routes into northern Armenia and short hops into Georgia via Bavra, picking up in Gyumri is the most direct option — especially if Lori is on the plan."

Fleet size

We work with around 150 cars in Yerevan and 120 in Gyumri. The categories are identical. For peak summer and autumn weeks, book 4–8 weeks ahead either way — automatics and SUVs go first.

"If automatic transmission is essential, Yerevan is the safer choice: bigger fleet, easier to confirm the exact category."

Where to drive from Gyumri

Gyumri is an excellent northern base: the main sights of northern Armenia and the Georgian border all sit within a 1.5-hour radius. The closest is Marmashen Monastery (10th–13th century) — just 10 km and 15 minutes away in a peaceful river valley. It’s the perfect gentle start before continuing to Vanadzor or the border.

"From Gyumri to Marmashen is the fastest monastery in Armenia: 15 minutes and you’re back in time for breakfast. After that you head deeper into Lori."

Within an hour you can reach Harichavank (45 km southeast), Spitak with its 1988 earthquake memorial (50 km northeast) and Vanadzor (100 km along the M7) — Armenia’s third city and the gateway to the Lori gorge. Beyond it the Debed valley opens up with Akhtala monastery, the Sanahin and Haghpat bridges, and Dilijan another hour further.

The Georgian border is reached via the Bavra–Ninotsminda crossing: 70 km of good tarmac, roughly 1.5 hours. It’s the quietest of the three Armenia–Georgia crossings — formalities usually take 15–30 minutes. From Ninotsminda on the Georgian side it’s an hour to Akhaltsikhe and two more to Borjomi.

"If your plan is the Gyumri – Lori – Georgia loop, we'll arrange the border permit and the Green Card so the route runs smoothly."

Safety and the character of the city

Gyumri is a calm city of about 100,000 people. Crime against tourists is almost non-existent, and the centre feels comfortable to walk both day and evening. Street parking is equally relaxed — most hotels and guesthouses include it in the rate, often in their own courtyards.

"In our experience, Gyumri is one of the quietest cities in the region. The car can be left at the hotel overnight without any extra precautions."

The military base and the 1988 earthquake

The Russian military base on the western edge of town is a closed, fenced area with no civilian access. It has zero impact on everyday tourism: the centre, museums and main sights are freely accessible, and the road to the Bavra border heads in the opposite direction.

Gyumri was badly affected by the 1988 Spitak earthquake (when it was still called Leninakan). Some unrestored buildings still stand in the centre, but the main monuments — the cathedral, Black Fortress and museums — have been carefully rebuilt. For many travellers this open relationship with history is part of Gyumri’s charm.

"Gyumri carries its history more openly than Yerevan. Leave a day for walking the centre — you won’t need the car."
