Where to rent

Because of this the person who took the car returned 140 GEL (in dollars) instead of 300 GEL.

Before that I had experience of renting a car in Greece, Spain, Montenegro, all cars were with mileage of 10 - 40 thousand km in excellent condition, I do not know, probably for Georgia it is normal that Chevrolet on which we drove was with mileage of 250 thousand.km, with numerous scratches on the body, burning airbag bulbs (most likely in the impact will not work), check engine (the owner said not to pay attention as the catalytic converter is missing and accordingly at startup because of the exhaust to stand next to was impossible), in the suspension something knocked, most likely the stabilizer bar, central lock did not work, the front cigarette lighter socket did not work, the rear - bad contact, after each refueling started with 3 times, throttled and tripped, from this at a steep rise were problems when driving, but fortunately it was not always so, the last 3 days worked without complaints, a big plus to the landlord that he brought the car to the place and also took it away. Our family of three rented a Toyota Prius Hybrid car from July 14 to July 30, 2022. The owner of the car - Tengiz drove the car from Tbilisi to Kutaisi airport at no extra charge. The car is not new, but fully serviceable and corresponds to the description. The machine is in good technical condition with low fuel consumption (Hybrid). I was somewhat surprised that we did not sign any documents, that is, nothing at all! It was said that everything would be recorded electronically. But where can I see everything, I did not understand. The passport and driver's license were photographed on the phone of the owner of the car and that's it. For rent for 16 days, we paid 1200 GEL + 200 GEL returnable deposit, which, in terms of dollars, came out to about 27 dollars a day. Taking into account the fact that in Georgia in July the high season, we can say that this is for nothing. For the entire time of the holiday, we traveled around half of Georgia and got two fines - turning in the wrong place (20 GEL) and speeding (50 GEL). Of all the documents for the car, we had only a plastic card - a technical passport. The presence of only one document did not raise any questions for the police. No one asked for a green card, no car lease, no insurance. I don’t know how it works in Georgia, but apparently it works somehow. )))) In Europe, I would already have problems, but here everything is fine. Miracles. I would like to express my gratitude to Tengiz for meeting and seeing us off on time, and for helping us quickly pay the fines at the Kutaisi airport. I wouldn't have made it without his help. We liked everything. We definitely recommend the owner!

What you should know before driving
🅿️ Download the parking app before you drive in Tbilisi. You'll get fined or towed if you don't pay through the app. One renter couldn't figure it out — his owner drove over and sorted the tickets himself.
📸 Watch out for speed cameras. They're everywhere on main highways, and fines are issued automatically. Andrej 🇨🇿 picked up two fines in 16 days — one for an illegal turn (20 GEL) and one for speeding (50 GEL). You may not even know until you return the car.
🛞 Check your tires before you leave. This is the most common issue in winter. Mismatched tires, worn tread, bald rubber on mountain roads — it all comes up. If you're heading to Mestia or Gudauri, inspect the tires at pickup and ask the owner to swap them if needed.
📍 Download offline maps. Google Maps and Maps.me don't always work well in Georgia — wrong pins, missing roads. Save your route offline and confirm the pickup point with your owner on WhatsApp before you land.
🚗 Pick the right car for your route. Going to Tusheti? You need a real 4x4 with low range — a Subaru won't cut it. Staying on highways between Tbilisi and Batumi? A Prius will save you a fortune on fuel. Heading to Svaneti on gravel roads? They're brutal, but a proper 4x4 handles them fine.

Driving basics
Georgia drives on the right. Speed limits: 60 km/h in cities, 90 km/h on open roads, 110 km/h on highways. Blood alcohol limit is 0.03% — effectively zero tolerance.
Main roads between major cities are in good condition. Mountain roads (Gudauri, Mestia, Stepantsminda) are paved but narrow with sharp turns — keep headlights on. Winter tires are mandatory on mountain passes from December 1 through March 1.

Fuel and parking
Fuel stations are plentiful along main routes. Stick to Wissol, Gulf, or Socar for consistent quality. Most are full-service — an attendant fills your tank. Expect around 3.0–3.5 GEL per liter for gasoline.
Paid parking operates in Tbilisi, Batumi, and Kutaisi through city parking apps. Everywhere else, parking is free.
