Why rent a car in Turkey?
Turkey stretches across two continents and over 780,000 square kilometres of coastline, mountains, ancient ruins, and inland valleys. Buses and domestic flights connect the big cities, but the places that make Turkey unforgettable — the lunar landscape of Cappadocia at dawn, hidden coves along the Lycian coast, the mountain roads of eastern Anatolia — sit beyond any bus timetable. A rental car turns a resort holiday into a proper road trip.
Turkey also happens to be one of the easiest countries to drive in. Roads are well-maintained, lane markings are clear, and signs at every junction are duplicated in English. Even after several hours behind the wheel, you won't feel worn out — the infrastructure is built for comfortable long-distance driving. On TakeCars, every listing shows real photos of the actual car, transparent pricing with insurance included, and reviews from travellers who've driven the same vehicle on the same roads. You're renting from a local person — not standing in an airport queue hoping for the best.

Where to rent a car in Turkey
TakeCars has suppliers across Turkey's major airports and cities. The most popular pickup spots include Istanbul (both Istanbul Airport and Sabiha Gökçen), Antalya, Izmir, Bodrum, Dalaman, Trabzon, Alanya, and Ankara.
One-way rentals are available between most cities — pick up in Antalya, drop off in Istanbul, or grab a car in Izmir and return it at Dalaman airport. Several renters mention how smooth this was, including Anna 🇷🇺 who picked up in Antalya and returned in Mersin. Many owners also deliver directly to your hotel and collect the car when you're done.

Turkey is one of our top countries for free class upgrades. Booked a Dacia Sandero, got an Opel Mokka. Reserved a Fiat, received a Toyota Corolla. A perk of renting from local suppliers who want to keep you happy.
What you should know before driving in Turkey
Turkey drives on the right. Roads are excellent, signs are duplicated in English, and international road markings apply — though the stop sign reads "DUR". Local drivers can be assertive, so stay calm and attentive. Speed limits: 50 km/h in towns, 90 km/h on rural roads, 120 km/h on motorways. Blood alcohol limit is 0.50 promille. Foreign drivers can use their home licence for up to 6 months (IDP required for non-Latin alphabet countries).

Toll roads
Turkey's motorways (otoyol) and all Bosphorus crossings are tolled electronically via HGS stickers — no cash accepted at the gates. Most TakeCars rental cars have HGS fitted; just tell your owner to activate it before your trip. Tolls are deducted from your deposit on return. Free alternative roads exist parallel to most motorways if you prefer to skip tolls.

Fuel and parking
Fuel costs around 55–63 TRY per litre (~$1.40 USD) for both gasoline and diesel. Stations (Petrol Ofisi, Shell, BP, Opet) are plentiful — most have attendants, and you can say "dolu depo" for a full tank. In Istanbul, use paid garages (10–20 TRY/hour) or free lots near shopping centres; on-street parking is managed by attendants in yellow vests. Coastal resorts have easier parking but it fills up in summer.

Insurance on TakeCars
Every car includes basic third-party liability (TPL) at no extra cost. You can upgrade to CDW, Super CDW, or Full Damage Waiver (FDW) for near-zero excess — cars with FDW are tagged "zero deposit." Evgenii 🇷🇺 highlighted this: his Istanbul rental came with no deposit, full insurance, and unlimited mileage — everything upfront.
Staying connected
Three providers: Turkcell (best coverage for road trips), Vodafone, and Turk Telekom. Tourist SIMs cost 1,000–1,700 TRY (~€26–45) for 28 days — buy from official shops, not street sellers. Free Wi-Fi is available at airports, cafés, and shopping centres. Download offline maps before heading into mountain areas.
