Why rent a car in Turkey?

Turkey stretches across two continents and over 780,000 square kilometres of coastline, mountains, ancient ruins, and inland valleys. Buses and domestic flights connect the big cities, but the places that make Turkey unforgettable — the lunar landscape of Cappadocia at dawn, hidden coves along the Lycian coast, the mountain roads of eastern Anatolia — sit beyond any bus timetable. A rental car turns a resort holiday into a proper road trip.

Turkey also happens to be one of the easiest countries to drive in. Roads are well-maintained, lane markings are clear, and signs at every junction are duplicated in English. Even after several hours behind the wheel, you won't feel worn out — the infrastructure is built for comfortable long-distance driving. On TakeCars, every listing shows real photos of the actual car, transparent pricing with insurance included, and reviews from travellers who've driven the same vehicle on the same roads. You're renting from a local person — not standing in an airport queue hoping for the best.

What travelers actually do with their rental cars

🚗 Roman 🇷🇺 took his first rental on a trip through Trabzon, Kars, and Erzurum — eastern Turkey in the dead of winter — and called the experience "qualitative and efficient"

🚗 Evgenii 🇷🇺 picked up at Istanbul airport and drove over 800 km to the Aegean Sea and back, burning just 5 litres per 100 km in a diesel Renault Clio — "no deposit, full insurance, and unlimited mileage is great"

🚗 Natalia 🇷🇺 covered 2,000 km through multiple Turkish cities in a diesel Hyundai Accent — "the car did not let us down"

🚗 Mikhail 🇷🇺 drove from Istanbul to Fethiye and back — about 2,500 km in an Opel Combo

🚗 Andrey 🇹🇷 needed a car to "travel a huge distance in Turkey" — even though he arrived late at night, the team was waiting for him

🚗 Anna 🇷🇺 picked up in Antalya and dropped off in Mersin — "it's mega convenient!"

🚗 Sergei 🇷🇺 rented for a trip to Cappadocia — not his first time using TakeCars — "just like last time, everything went fine"

🤝 Igor 🇷🇺 ordered a Nissan Qashqai, received a Peugeot of similar class — "the car was new, clean, with winter tires. Service is organized perfectly: brought and picked up on time"

🤝 Nadezda 🇷🇺 needed an extra day and it was no problem — just paid the daily rate with no fuss. No deposit, no credit card required, cash on the spot

🤝 Sergei 🇷🇺 had connection problems at the airport — paid in cash, no issues. For 10 days with full insurance, the total was "less than 300 dollars"

Where to rent a car in Turkey

TakeCars has suppliers across Turkey's major airports and cities. The most popular pickup spots include Istanbul (both Istanbul Airport and Sabiha Gökçen), Antalya, Izmir, Bodrum, Dalaman, Trabzon, Alanya, and Ankara.

One-way rentals are available between most cities — pick up in Antalya, drop off in Istanbul, or grab a car in Izmir and return it at Dalaman airport. Several renters mention how smooth this was, including Anna 🇷🇺 who picked up in Antalya and returned in Mersin. Many owners also deliver directly to your hotel and collect the car when you're done.

Ihar 🇧🇾 — "Everything was fast, clear and all conditions of the contract were fulfilled! Tolga was pleasant in communication, answered all questions, we received a clean and serviceable car. Our trip was comfortable and unforgettable."

Fiat Egea in Turkey

Everything went well except for one thing. The whole rental cost about 750 dollars. When renting on the website, I paid 10000 rubles at once. And it was said that the rest of the rental cost of 630 dollars will pay when you get the car. But when issuing the car paid to you (10000) guys in Turkey did not recognize and took from us 750 dollars. (I can be a little wrong in the figures, but the order is like this)

In general, everything is ok, except for one but, the flight was delayed for 2 hours and the rent was lost and instead of an automatic machine we had to take a mech.

Renault Megane Sedan in Turkey

It didn't go well with my lease! They charged me a lot of extra money before I turned the car in. For the car wash was one. I drove on toll roads, then I was shown a receipt of payment, I agreed to it. Next, they said that most likely you were somewhere else, and that the system displays it after 3 days. and that because these charges are not yet in the system, you have to pay double the price. This is their way of insuring that they don't have new accruals coming to them in a couple of days. My arguments and timing that in the system find all the payment points that I crossed they did not take!

everything is good! The only thing on the car violated or camber or wheel balancing, vibration on the body and steering wheel beats at speeds above 90, but I rarely with such a drive, so I did not interfere much. And so everything is normal, everything was satisfactory

We were very satisfied with everything. We would like to note separately that they meet and escort us to the airport. All the employees of the company are very polite and customer-oriented people. The car was almost new. Thank you for your work! We are ready to recommend you to friends and acquaintances).

Peugeot 301 in Turkey

It was usual. 4-, I didn’t like that they took $ 15 plus 40 for car delivery, under the pretext that the hotel was not in Kemer, but outside. 10 minutes drive. Turkish "entrepreneurship" in relation to disposable tourists. Like new ones will come anyway, you can snatch more from these. Already rather familiar, but sometimes pisses me off

Everything was smooth with the rental. The car was provided according to the order. It took 5 minutes to check in. We waited at the airport for about 15 minutes. The car was delivered quickly too. Hyundai i20 in Turkey

Instead of a Hyundai we were given a Renault, which was fine. The car is certainly not a Mercedes or even a Skoda, but it was better than a cab or a bus. Convenient meeting at the airport all clearly according to the contract without deceit and so on all questions answered phone to connect helped! A huge disadvantage is to give a car with an empty tank such a self and in people in a foreign country (especially knowing the French car industry when the light bulb is on gas can run out in 5 km, it is not a German on which another 50-60 km can be driven around the city before it will stand up). Even knowing the local climate you can give some thing like foil to close the windshield could be like the locals because at 45⁰ under the sun the steering wheel can not be taken)). You can also put a phone charger from the cigarette lighter. You rent cars to Russians. These mini things are already thought out in all countries. Look how bikes are rented by owners from the CIS with a charger with a cover on the seat that did not get warm in the sun with raincoats with helmets, etc. It's all extra comfort. Add this raise the price a bit to cover it and all cis customers are yours! Plus booking payment via rf card is of course a huge plus. Only because of the fact that large companies that have a car class higher ask for a credit card visa or master, which is difficult to formalize now in Russia, we chose you. A regular card is not enough for everyone. I give it a 3+ out of 5. Only for the empty tank was a real problem. If it wasn't for that then 4+. I hope it was a one time accident at your place

Rental car on a coastal road in Turkey with turquoise Mediterranean Sea view
  • 📋 Simple terms, no fine print

Every listing shows the full price, deposit, and insurance before you book. No counter surprises, no pressure to buy extras. The price includes insurance, delivery, and taxes — locked in before you book.

  • 💬 Direct contact with your owner

Message your car owner directly through TakeCars. Renters coordinate airport pickups at 3 AM, change return locations mid-trip, and ask about HGS tolls — all via WhatsApp. A person, not a call centre.

  • 🚗 Free upgrades when available

Turkey is one of our top countries for free class upgrades. Booked a Dacia Sandero, got an Opel Mokka. Reserved a Fiat, received a Toyota Corolla. A perk of renting from local suppliers who want to keep you happy.

What you should know before driving in Turkey

Turkey drives on the right. Roads are excellent, signs are duplicated in English, and international road markings apply — though the stop sign reads "DUR". Local drivers can be assertive, so stay calm and attentive. Speed limits: 50 km/h in towns, 90 km/h on rural roads, 120 km/h on motorways. Blood alcohol limit is 0.50 promille. Foreign drivers can use their home licence for up to 6 months (IDP required for non-Latin alphabet countries).

Toll roads

Turkey's motorways (otoyol) and all Bosphorus crossings are tolled electronically via HGS stickers — no cash accepted at the gates. Most TakeCars rental cars have HGS fitted; just tell your owner to activate it before your trip. Tolls are deducted from your deposit on return. Free alternative roads exist parallel to most motorways if you prefer to skip tolls.

Toll prices, HGS setup, and motorway routes →

Fuel and parking

Fuel costs around 55–63 TRY per litre (~$1.40 USD) for both gasoline and diesel. Stations (Petrol Ofisi, Shell, BP, Opet) are plentiful — most have attendants, and you can say "dolu depo" for a full tank. In Istanbul, use paid garages (10–20 TRY/hour) or free lots near shopping centres; on-street parking is managed by attendants in yellow vests. Coastal resorts have easier parking but it fills up in summer.

Fuel station tips, parking rules, and fine amounts →

Insurance on TakeCars

Every car includes basic third-party liability (TPL) at no extra cost. You can upgrade to CDW, Super CDW, or Full Damage Waiver (FDW) for near-zero excess — cars with FDW are tagged "zero deposit." Evgenii 🇷🇺 highlighted this: his Istanbul rental came with no deposit, full insurance, and unlimited mileage — everything upfront.

Staying connected

Three providers: Turkcell (best coverage for road trips), Vodafone, and Turk Telekom. Tourist SIMs cost 1,000–1,700 TRY (~€26–45) for 28 days — buy from official shops, not street sellers. Free Wi-Fi is available at airports, cafés, and shopping centres. Download offline maps before heading into mountain areas.
