Why rent a car in Turkey?

Turkey stretches across two continents and over 780,000 square kilometres of coastline, mountains, ancient ruins, and inland valleys. Buses and domestic flights connect the big cities, but the places that make Turkey unforgettable — the lunar landscape of Cappadocia at dawn, hidden coves along the Lycian coast, the mountain roads of eastern Anatolia — sit beyond any bus timetable. A rental car turns a resort holiday into a proper road trip.

Turkey also happens to be one of the easiest countries to drive in. Roads are well-maintained, lane markings are clear, and signs at every junction are duplicated in English. Even after several hours behind the wheel, you won't feel worn out — the infrastructure is built for comfortable long-distance driving. On TakeCars, every listing shows real photos of the actual car, transparent pricing with insurance included, and reviews from travellers who've driven the same vehicle on the same roads. You're renting from a local person — not standing in an airport queue hoping for the best.

What travelers actually do with their rental cars

🚗 Roman 🇷🇺 took his first rental on a trip through Trabzon, Kars, and Erzurum — eastern Turkey in the dead of winter — and called the experience "qualitative and efficient"

🚗 Evgenii 🇷🇺 picked up at Istanbul airport and drove over 800 km to the Aegean Sea and back, burning just 5 litres per 100 km in a diesel Renault Clio — "no deposit, full insurance, and unlimited mileage is great"

🚗 Natalia 🇷🇺 covered 2,000 km through multiple Turkish cities in a diesel Hyundai Accent — "the car did not let us down"

🚗 Mikhail 🇷🇺 drove from Istanbul to Fethiye and back — about 2,500 km in an Opel Combo

🚗 Andrey 🇹🇷 needed a car to "travel a huge distance in Turkey" — even though he arrived late at night, the team was waiting for him

🚗 Anna 🇷🇺 picked up in Antalya and dropped off in Mersin — "it's mega convenient!"

🚗 Sergei 🇷🇺 rented for a trip to Cappadocia — not his first time using TakeCars — "just like last time, everything went fine"

What owners have done for renters

🤝 Danil 🇷🇺 booked an economy car and got a Renault Megane instead — a higher class, no extra charge: "they gave it to me at the airport, which was very convenient"

🤝 Igor 🇷🇺 ordered a Nissan Qashqai, received a Peugeot of similar class — "the car was new, clean, with winter tires. Service is organized perfectly: brought and picked up on time"

🤝 Iana 🇷🇺 got upgraded from a Dacia Sandero to an Opel Mokka, and the owner calmly accepted a last-minute pickup address change

🤝 Vladimir 🇷🇺 had his car delivered to his hotel and collected at the airport — "the car was in perfect condition, low mileage, clean inside and out"

🤝 Nadezda 🇷🇺 needed an extra day and it was no problem — just paid the daily rate with no fuss. No deposit, no credit card required, cash on the spot

🤝 Sergei 🇷🇺 had connection problems at the airport — paid in cash, no issues. For 10 days with full insurance, the total was "less than 300 dollars"

Where to rent a car in Turkey

TakeCars has suppliers across Turkey's major airports and cities. The most popular pickup spots include Istanbul (both Istanbul Airport and Sabiha Gökçen), Antalya, Izmir, Bodrum, Dalaman, Trabzon, Alanya, and Ankara.

One-way rentals are available between most cities — pick up in Antalya, drop off in Istanbul, or grab a car in Izmir and return it at Dalaman airport. Several renters mention how smooth this was, including Anna 🇷🇺 who picked up in Antalya and returned in Mersin. Many owners also deliver directly to your hotel and collect the car when you're done.

Customer reviews

Evgenii 🇷🇺 — "I received the car at Istanbul airport in 5 minutes without any problems, and gave it back there in 5 minutes as well. Drove more than 800 km to the Aegean Sea and back, consumption about 5 litres. No deposit, full insurance and unlimited mileage is great."

Jakub 🇵🇱 — "The driver met us at the airport and took us to the rental center, everything took about 15 minutes and we were on our way. The car is excellent, communication with the company is also top notch."

Ihar 🇧🇾 — "Everything was fast, clear and all conditions of the contract were fulfilled! Tolga was pleasant in communication, answered all questions, we received a clean and serviceable car. Our trip was comfortable and unforgettable."

Sergei 🇷🇺 — "The rental cost is one of the lowest. It allowed me to take a car with full insurance. For 10 days the price was less than 300 dollars, which is very budget."

Pros: 1) The car is the one I chose. 2) It was delivered on time. 3) Checkout took little time. 4) Traveled all the way without incident. Cons: 1) Dirty windshield from inside, which made driving at night difficult. 2) Empty tank initially. 3) Employee didn't have change from a $300 bill even though I texted in advance. 4) Left rear tire was flat a third of the way down . 5) Right rear right strut is knocking. 6) Pads in calipers squeak. 7) The steering wheel is squeaky. 8) Dirty seats.

Renault Clio 5 in Turkey

we had to wait a little while for the car, but they took us from the airport to the office to make it easier to wait. the car was kind of a better car, diesel. the car was a bit old technically, you could see it had been beaten up, maybe even once badly beaten up and badly repaired. and the most offensive thing is that I poured urea into the car when the light bulb came on, although in theory I would have had enough urea to drive and hand over the car, but I didn't take any risks, so as not to miss the plane ... I had to buy and pour, and there was not even a funnel in the car, they did not compensate me for urea, although I poured 5 liters (they do not sell less), and this is for 5-6 thousand km, and drove 1 thousand.

Citroen C-Elysee in Turkey

The car rental service exceeded our expectations. The car was clean, serviceable, roomy and comfortable. We received the car with delivery to the hotel. Explained in detail how to refuel and what to do in case of an accident. The return of the car also passed without problems, the deposit was returned in full. We drove it through the serpentines absolutely calmly and with great comfort. We will contact them again on our next visit.

All in all, it went pretty well. But we found out that we had changed our car to a Hyundai Bayon right at the car handover. We had to go to the car with the person who issued the car, with suitcases in the cabin, a small child on his lap and not in a seat, a baby stroller on his lap in the cabin. The car we were given was without a child seat, and we had to wait an hour for one.

Citroen Space Tourer in Turkey

We took this car for 2 weeks. The car is new, comfortable, in excellent condition. The representative of the rental company met us at the airport, took us to the office (10 minutes). The registration was done quite quickly, we paid in cash. Since we took full insurance, no deposit was required. We took additional insurance for absence of police report in case of damage. Since we took the car in the evening, in a poorly lit parking lot it is difficult to see the existing damage, but with full insurance it is not required. When returning in this case, respectively, there are no questions. In general, we were very satisfied with the operation of the car and the renter. The only thing, I recommend you to make a reserve at delivery. We handed in at 7 am before the flight. We had to wait 30min, because the employee apparently took the previous clients to the airport, a little nervous. But in the end, everything was accepted, we were taken to the same car, all in time. In general, I recommend.

Renault Megane Sedan in Turkey

On the site/service: in general, everything is ok. The site is clear. Everything is fast. No tons of extra information to fill out. The downside is insurance. I now about https://takecars.com/ . On takecars, having chosen the maximum insurance (can't remember what it is called) I didn't get it. When renting a car, the lessor claimed that this type of insurance does not include glass, mirrors, etc. Paid an extra 5 euros for each day. Either he tricked me or really did not include - unclear. About the landlord. Met and escorted well. Quickly. The car technically ok. One, but a huge minus - smoky interior. Terribly smoky. The child seat is also dirty. I took the top off the seat and washed it. But the odor is a problem. Give feedback to the service to process the cabin, if they allow you to smoke in it. Smoke bomb costs pennies and solves the problem in 10 minutes.

Rental car on a coastal road in Turkey with turquoise Mediterranean Sea view
  • 📋 Simple terms, no fine print

Every listing shows the full price, deposit, and insurance before you book. No counter surprises, no pressure to buy extras. The price includes insurance, delivery, and taxes — locked in before you book.

  • 💬 Direct contact with your owner

Message your car owner directly through TakeCars. Renters coordinate airport pickups at 3 AM, change return locations mid-trip, and ask about HGS tolls — all via WhatsApp. A person, not a call centre.

  • 🚗 Free upgrades when available

Turkey is one of our top countries for free class upgrades. Booked a Dacia Sandero, got an Opel Mokka. Reserved a Fiat, received a Toyota Corolla. A perk of renting from local suppliers who want to keep you happy.

What you should know before driving in Turkey

Turkey drives on the right. Roads are excellent, signs are duplicated in English, and international road markings apply — though the stop sign reads "DUR". Local drivers can be assertive, so stay calm and attentive. Speed limits: 50 km/h in towns, 90 km/h on rural roads, 120 km/h on motorways. Blood alcohol limit is 0.50 promille. Foreign drivers can use their home licence for up to 6 months (IDP required for non-Latin alphabet countries).

Full driving guide: rules, police, fines, and tips for first-timers →

Toll roads

Turkey's motorways (otoyol) and all Bosphorus crossings are tolled electronically via HGS stickers — no cash accepted at the gates. Most TakeCars rental cars have HGS fitted; just tell your owner to activate it before your trip. Tolls are deducted from your deposit on return. Free alternative roads exist parallel to most motorways if you prefer to skip tolls.

Toll prices, HGS setup, and motorway routes →

Fuel and parking

Fuel costs around 55–63 TRY per litre (~$1.40 USD) for both gasoline and diesel. Stations (Petrol Ofisi, Shell, BP, Opet) are plentiful — most have attendants, and you can say "dolu depo" for a full tank. In Istanbul, use paid garages (10–20 TRY/hour) or free lots near shopping centres; on-street parking is managed by attendants in yellow vests. Coastal resorts have easier parking but it fills up in summer.

Fuel station tips, parking rules, and fine amounts →

Insurance on TakeCars

Every car includes basic third-party liability (TPL) at no extra cost. You can upgrade to CDW, Super CDW, or Full Damage Waiver (FDW) for near-zero excess — cars with FDW are tagged "zero deposit." Evgenii 🇷🇺 highlighted this: his Istanbul rental came with no deposit, full insurance, and unlimited mileage — everything upfront.

Staying connected

Three providers: Turkcell (best coverage for road trips), Vodafone, and Turk Telekom. Tourist SIMs cost 1,000–1,700 TRY (~€26–45) for 28 days — buy from official shops, not street sellers. Free Wi-Fi is available at airports, cafés, and shopping centres. Download offline maps before heading into mountain areas.

SIM cards, connectivity, and other practical tips →

Turkey with locals

Our renters have crossed Turkey from the Aegean to the Black Sea and everywhere in between. We're compiling their routes, tips, and stories into guides that go beyond the tourist brochure. From the Antalya coastline (Antalya, Alanya, Side, Kemer) to the volcanic landscape of Cappadocia, to navigating Istanbul's chaotic traffic and the mountain roads of eastern Anatolia — these are real experiences from real trips.
