Car hire at Nevşehir-Cappadocia Airport (NAV) is a different story altogether from the coastal resorts. Cappadocia isn’t Bodrum: here a car isn’t needed for the entire trip, just for two or three specific days within a typical four- or five-day itinerary. The rest of the time you explore Göreme on foot, the balloon flight includes a hotel transfer, and the valleys are covered by organised Red and Green Tours.
“The standard plan is one day with an organised tour for context, two days of self-drive for viewpoints, underground cities and Ihlara. The balloon doesn’t need a car.”
NAV is a compact regional terminal, 37–40 km from Göreme — about 35–40 minutes via the D300. Direct flights from Istanbul are operated by Turkish Airlines, Pegasus and AnadoluJet. Fares are a little higher than at Kayseri (ASR), but the 30–40 minute time saving on each leg often makes up for it.
“The smoothest arrival in Cappadocia is a direct flight into NAV, the car waiting at the exit, and forty minutes later you’re already at your cave hotel. No long shuttle rides or group transfers.”
NAV or ASR — which is the better airport
Cappadocia is served by two airports, and deciding which one to fly into is worth settling before you book your flights.
NAV: closer and simpler
Nevşehir-Cappadocia is just 37–40 km from Göreme — a relaxed 35–40 minutes along the D300. It’s a small, friendly terminal with 26 rental desks: Europcar, Avis, Hertz, Budget, Sixt, Enterprise and several strong local operators. Economy cars start from $24 a day; November is the cheapest month with an average of $37.
“NAV is for travellers on a direct flight from Istanbul. Fifteen minutes from the gate to the wheel, and forty minutes later you’re at the door of your cave hotel. That’s it.”
ASR: further out, but often cheaper flights
Kayseri Erkilet is 72–75 km away — roughly an hour to Göreme. The airport is larger, has more flights, and tickets are frequently €30–50 lower. Economy hire starts from $18 a day.
“Simple rule: if the flight saving is under €30, choose NAV. That extra hour each way after a long journey is time you won’t get back.”
A shuttle if you don’t need the car straight away
Shared shuttle from NAV to Göreme costs €10–15 per person and is timed to arrivals. Private transfer for up to four people is $25–40. If you only need a car for one or two days, the shuttle plus hotel delivery often works out cheaper than collecting at the airport.
