Car hire on Zakynthos turns the holiday from "hotel plus beach" into a proper road trip. The island is the third-largest in the Ionian, and its headline sights — Navagio (Shipwreck) Beach, the Blue Caves, Anafonitria monastery and the Caretta turtle bay at Laganas — are scattered across the map. Without a car most of them stay out of reach.
A guest landed at ZTH on the 14:35 charter, signed the contract at the terminal door, and was at the hotel in Tsilivi in twenty minutes. The 4 km to town is the island's quiet advantage — no shuttle, no long transfer.
The island has one airport — ZTH, around 4 km from Zakynthos Town, and not a single toll road across the whole island. Local operators here outpace the global chains on deposits and cash payments, and the fleet talks to the geography: small engines for the switchbacks, hotel delivery for the resorts on the south coast.
Where to drive
A hire car opens four directions. North goes to Skinari port for the boats out to the Blue Caves, plus the villages of Volimes and Maries. West runs to the Navagio viewpoint (the postcard one) and the small Porto Vromi harbour, where the boat to the beach itself leaves. South reaches Keri bay with its caves and Marathonisi, the turtle islet, then on to Laganas and Kalamaki. Centre means Zakynthos Town with the St Dionysios cathedral, and behind it the mountain monastery of Anafonitria.
A standard week: two beach days at the hotel, a Navagio day with the boat, a Blue Caves day, a Keri day with the turtle island, and a monastery day in the hills.
Anafonitria itself is a pilgrimage stop for Orthodox visitors — the monastery where St Dionysios, the island's patron saint, lived. A tarmac switchback climbs from Zakynthos Town in about an hour, and from Anafonitria it is roughly half an hour onward to the western cliffs and the Navagio viewpoint.
No toll motorways anywhere — the only road costs are petrol and a handful of paid car parks in Zakynthos Town.
What travellers value about hiring on Zakynthos
-
Airport 4 km from the centre
ZTH is closer than most island airports — the car is at your hotel within 10 minutes.
-
Hotel delivery to Tsilivi and Alikes
Local operators bring the car to the resort hotels — usually free for rentals from 5 days.
-
Pre-booking chat about the Navagio road
You can ask the supplier through chat whether the gravel viewpoint road is allowed before you commit — terms vary between operators.
Navagio, the Blue Caves and turtles
Three signature days take shape from the car.
Navagio: boat and viewpoint
Navagio Beach is reachable ONLY from the sea. Boats run from Porto Vromi on the south-west coast and from Agios Nikolaos in the north. Park free at the harbour and take the boat ($25–35 return). You cannot walk or drive onto the beach itself — it's a bay enclosed by cliffs. The viewpoint above is the postcard angle: a mountain road, the last 4 km on gravel, and many operators don't allow it on their cars.
A family on a basic CDW drove the gravel last summer, clipped a rock fifty metres before the platform, and the windscreen wasn't covered. Worth a single message to the supplier before pickup to confirm where you can take the car.
Blue Caves by boat
The Blue Caves are at the northern tip. A tarmac road climbs to Skinari port (about an hour and a half from Zakynthos Town). Free parking at the small harbour. The boat tour runs an hour at $20–30 per head.
Keri turtle bay
Keri Bay in the south has limestone caves and Marathonisi, the islet where Caretta turtles nest. Boats from Limni Keriou run a two-hour tour at around $25, often with turtle sightings on the way. You can't land on the islet itself — it's a protected nesting site.
Mornings in August and September give the best chance of seeing hatchlings on the surface. Closer to home, Bochali above Zakynthos Town is a five-minute drive for a sunset view over the harbour, and the small ferry from Agios Nikolaos crosses to Pesada on Kefalonia in foot-passenger mode (no hire cars on board — see the FAQ).
ZTH airport and where to base
Zakynthos "Dionysios Solomos" airport (ZTH) sits about 4 km from Zakynthos Town, roughly seven to ten minutes by car. The terminal is small; local operators wait at the arrivals exit by name, with paperwork done in the hall in around ten minutes. No shuttles, no off-site CarPark buildings.
A couple from Edinburgh on the late EasyJet from Gatwick wanted dinner in Tsilivi before everything closed. Keys in hand at 23:10, parked outside the hotel by 23:30 — the shuttle queue at the global desks was still standing under the strip lights.
Several basing options. Zakynthos Town suits travellers who want streetlife, tavernas, and the St Dionysios cathedral close at hand. Argassi, Tsilivi and Kalamaki are the beach-resort belt south of town, five to fifteen minutes from the centre. Alikes on the north coast is quieter and cheaper. Laganas is the UK nightlife strip — lively until late, not for everyone.
For families, Tsilivi and Alikes are the gentler choices. Local operators on TakeCars usually deliver the car free to Argassi, Tsilivi, Alikes and Kalamaki on rentals from five days.
Parking and the turtle rules
Parking on Zakynthos is far easier than on Mykonos or Santorini. In Zakynthos Town the central zone by the port is paid ($2–4 an hour, blue-zone street parking and a few small municipal lots — no app-based metering of the Athens kind), and the new town has free stretches. Most hotels include a parking slot for guests.
A traveller circled the cathedral three times looking for a slot, then drove 200 metres inland to the bus-station side streets and parked free. In Zakynthos Town the rule is simple: one block back from the seafront and you stop paying.
The turtle rules at Laganas
The driving rule that really matters on Zakynthos is in Laganas Bay, home to the Caretta-Caretta National Marine Park. From May to October the turtles nest on the beaches and strict rules apply: no driving on the beach, no bright headlights at night on coastal roads, fines from $330. Daytime driving to Laganas is fine; the limits bite after dark.
If you're heading to Laganas in the evening, dip to low beams about 2 km out. Hatchlings navigate by moonlight and full headlights throw them off course. In Laganas itself at night, leave the car at the hotel and take a taxi — it's a UK nightlife zone with strict drink-drive enforcement and a roadblock or two most weekends.
Petrol stations across the island are EKO, Shell, Avin and BP, with the densest cluster around Zakynthos Town and the airport road. Fill up before the run to Anafonitria — past Maries the pumps get sparse.

Frequently asked questions
In shoulder season (May–June, September–October) economy is from $30 a day; in July–August prices reach $50–60. Zakynthos is on a par with Corfu and Crete — cheaper than Santorini and Mykonos. Automatics sit 30–60% above manuals and need a 2-week head start in high season.
4 km, around 7 minutes by car. No tolls. Alternatives are the city KTEL bus at €2 (15 minutes) or a taxi at $10–15. One of the most compact airports in Greece.
ONLY by boat. Boats run from Porto Vromi (south-west, $25 return, 30 minutes) or Agios Nikolaos (north, $30, 45 minutes). Park free at the harbour. You can't walk or drive onto the beach itself — it's a cliff-enclosed bay.
Only with some rentals. The last 4 km of the road to the viewpoint is gravel, and many operators forbid it (insurance is voided on the first scrape). Check with the supplier before booking. Alternative — park on the main road and walk in 30 minutes.
There's no road to the caves themselves. You drive to Skinari port at the northern tip (1.5 hours from Zakynthos Town on tarmac), park free and take a boat tour ($20–30, 1 hour). On the way back, drop in at Anafonitria.
Laganas Bay is the Caretta-Caretta National Marine Park. From May to October strict rules apply: no driving on the beach, no bright headlights at night on coastal roads, fines from $330. Hatchlings navigate by moonlight and full headlights throw them off course.
Anafonitria is 28 km from Zakynthos Town, around an hour on the mountain road via Maries. Free parking at the monastery. This is where St Dionysios, patron of the island, lived. The Navagio viewpoint sits a short drive away.
In Zakynthos Town itself, on the south-east edge of the seafront. Paid parking by the port ($2–4 an hour) or free near the bus station. The headline pilgrimage site of the island — St Dionysios's relics rest in the cathedral, with visitors year round.
No. Zakynthos hire cars are not allowed on any ferry — to Kefalonia, Ithaca or the mainland. The contract is voided. For a multi-island trip, return at ZTH and pick up a fresh car on Kefalonia.
No, none. Every road on the island is free, including the mountain switchbacks to Anafonitria and the northern road to Skinari. The only road costs are petrol and the paid car parks in Zakynthos Town.
For a typical itinerary, no. Anafonitria, Skinari, Keri, Laganas and the upper Navagio viewpoint up to the gravel section are reachable on an economy. A 4×4 only matters if you want the gravel to the viewpoint — and only if the supplier allows it.
Keri is 16 km from Zakynthos Town, 25 minutes away. Free parking at Limni Keriou port. The boat tour to the caves and Marathonisi is 2 hours at $25. Best chances of turtles are mornings in August and September when hatchlings emerge.
Economy — Hyundai i10, Toyota Aygo, Fiat Panda. There are mountain switchbacks, but they're gentle, and a compact car copes. For a family with kids — Hyundai i20 or Volkswagen Polo. An SUV is overkill and costs more in car parks.
Laganas is the UK young-adult nightlife zone. Police enforce drink-drive limits hard from 23:00 to 04:00. Drivers under two years' experience face a 0.2‰ limit (effectively zero). For dinner or evenings out in Laganas, take a taxi.
Yes, but at heavy reduction. April to October is peak with daily charters from the UK, Germany and Poland. November to March there are 4–5 times fewer flights and some rental desks are closed. In low season, book 3 weeks ahead — or fly via Athens.
