Rent a car in Niš and you have the southern gateway to Serbia and the most convenient base for Eastern Serbia, Bulgaria and North Macedonia. The country's third city — birthplace of Constantine the Great and the Roman Naissus — sits off the main tourist track: rentals come in cheaper than the capital, parking is simpler, and traffic is calmer than Belgrade.

Niš is the Serbia where you can still park right by the fortress and step inside the medieval walls in five minutes. Belgrade no longer offers that kind of immediacy.

Real reviews per specific car, transparent deposits and free hotel delivery within the city — closer to a hotel booking than a traditional rental desk. Cross-border permits to Bulgaria and North Macedonia are agreed in writing before pickup.

Local Niš agencies are small and quick to confirm in chat — the back-and-forth often closes faster than a phone call from abroad.

Pricing, deposit and payment

Economy manuals in Niš start at $14–22 a day off-season and reach $32–50 in peak summer. Sedans and crossovers $30–50, SUVs $48–65. Prices run 10–20% below Belgrade — no airport surcharges even at INI, and the fleet skews towards practical basics rather than premium. Two to three weeks of rental cuts the daily rate by 20–35%.

Niš is the most cost-efficient launchpad in southern Serbia. For a route that strings Bulgaria, Macedonia and northern Greece together, there's no cheaper place to start.

Local supplier deposits run $108–430; international chains at INI/BEG hold $540–1,100. Several of our partners offer zero-deposit rates with Full CDW already in the daily price. Cash deposits at smaller local agencies work more often than in Belgrade — Niš is a more cash-driven market.

Smaller Niš locals are happy to take a cash deposit in euros. If you don't carry a credit card or simply prefer not to block a sum, this is a workable route.

A 15–20% online prepayment by card secures the booking; the balance is paid at pickup, in cash (EUR or RSD) or by Visa/Mastercard. The handiest fuel network in the south is NIS Petrol, which accepts every international card.

Cross-border trips from Niš

Niš is the most natural starting point for Bulgaria and North Macedonia. The Bulgarian border at Dimitrovgrad is 95 km; Sofia is 165 km and 2 hours away. The North Macedonian border at Preševo is 110 km; Skopje 200 km and 2.5 hours. Both routes are heavily used by our customers as weekend day trips.

From Niš you can reach Sofia by lunchtime and be back for dinner — handy when you need to pick up a parcel in the Bulgarian capital or run a quick errand abroad.

Most of our partners arrange cross-border permits at $48–70 for Bulgaria/Macedonia and $60–80 for Bosnia or Montenegro. Bulgaria requires an electronic e-vignette ($10 for a week), bought online and registered to the rental's licence plate. North Macedonia has no vignette — payments at toll booths instead.

Always buy the Bulgarian e-vignette online before crossing — the first camera will fine you €100 if you don't. Serbian rentals usually don't sort this for you.

Croatia is a longer haul from Niš — 600+ km. Kosovo is forbidden by virtually all Serbian rental companies. The standard blacklist also includes Albania, Turkey, Greece, Russia, Belarus, Ukraine and Moldova.

Frequent Questions

Does Niš have its own airport?

Yes — Constantine the Great Airport (INI), 4 km from the centre. Wizz Air flies in from Dortmund, Basel, Memmingen, Gothenburg, Tivat and Podgorica, with seasonal routes added. The terminal is small — about 50 metres from arrival to the rental desk. A useful option whenever a direct flight is available.

How long is the drive from Belgrade to Niš?

240 km and around 2.5 hours on the A1 motorway. The toll runs about $10 each way. It's the second-most-popular one-way route inside Serbia after Belgrade–Novi Sad. One-way rental adds about $140 to the booking.

Is it better to fly into INI or BEG?

With a direct Wizz Air route into INI — clearly INI: 4 km from the centre vs 240 km and 2.5 hours from Belgrade. BEG makes sense with European connections and when Belgrade and Novi Sad are part of the trip. Niš rentals usually run 10–20% cheaper than Belgrade.

How much does a rental cost in Niš on average?

Economy manuals run $14–22 off-season and $32–50 in peak summer. SUVs $48–65; automatics add $5–15. Two to three weeks of rental drops the rate by 20–35%. The lowest prices are at smaller local partners with no airport surcharges — even at INI.

Can I rent a car in Niš without a deposit?

Yes, several of our partners offer zero-deposit rates with Full CDW built in. Stock for these tariffs is smaller than in Belgrade, so book ahead. A cash deposit in euros at small local agencies is also a workable alternative — common practice in Niš.

Can I drive my Niš rental car into Kosovo?

No. Virtually every Serbian rental forbids Kosovo: the Green Card insurance is not valid there, and the Niš rental contract excludes the route. Travellers who need Kosovo usually pick up a separate rental in Pristina rather than try to drive a Serbian-plated car across.

How long is the drive from Niš to Sofia?

165 km and around 2 hours via the Dimitrovgrad crossing. Costs: Bulgarian e-vignette $10 for a week, fuel $25–35, and a few small toll points. Round trip on the car works out to $55–75. A good day-trip route — the rental pays for itself immediately.

Do I need a vignette for Bulgaria?

Yes, mandatory. Bulgaria uses an electronic e-vignette: $10 for a week for a passenger car. Buy online before the crossing and register it to the rental's licence plate. Roadside cameras enforce — driving without a valid vignette costs around €100 in fines.

What is the Skull Tower and is it worth a visit?

A historic tower from 1809 with the skulls of fallen Serbian fighters embedded in its walls by Ottoman forces. Today it's a national monument inside a small chapel, 2 km from central Niš. Heavy in tone, but historically significant — five minutes' drive from the fortress, with free parking on site.

Is Devil's Town worth the trip?

Yes — it's one of the most striking natural sites in Serbia, with UNESCO-tentative status: 200 stone "figures" sculpted by erosion. 90 km from Niš, paved road right to the foot of the formation, 15-minute walk to the rocks. Parking is around $1 and entry $3.

How long is the drive to Skopje and North Macedonia?

200 km and 2.5 hours via the Preševo crossing. North Macedonia has no vignette but a few toll booths — about $5 total to Skopje. The cross-border permit from the rental runs $48–70. A workable one-way route or a long day trip.

Where can I park in central Niš?

Central paid zones run about $0.30 per hour and the choice of car parks is simpler than Belgrade. The large car park by Niš Fortress is free 24/7. The Skull Tower also has free parking. On Sundays street parking in the centre is free.

When is the busiest season in Niš?

August — Nišville Jazz Festival and Beer Fest, plus peak summer tourism. Prices rise 20–40% and the fleet sells out 3–4 weeks in advance. Best balance of price and weather is May–June and September: warm enough, prices calm, and Sićevo and Sokobanja stay quiet.

Can I do a Niš → Bulgaria → North Macedonia road trip?

Yes — a classic 5–6 day tri-country loop. List all three countries at booking. You'll need a Serbian Green Card, the Bulgarian e-vignette and a cross-border permit. Route: Niš → Pirot → Sofia → Skopje → Preševo → back to Niš. Roughly 700 km in total.

Is unlimited mileage standard on Niš rentals?

Most local Niš rentals come with unlimited mileage, which suits cross-border day trips into Bulgaria and Macedonia. A few low-rate offers cap mileage at 150–200 km per day — easy to exceed on a Sokobanja loop. Confirm at booking and pick an unlimited-mileage tariff for any longer trip.
