Car rental in Faro is the entry ticket to the Algarve. Unlike Lisbon and Porto, where the question is whether you need a car at all, here the answer is almost always yes: public transport is sparse, timetables do not match beach plans, and the prettiest coves between Lagos, Sagres and Tavira sit at the end of a dirt track, not a bus stop.

A couple landing at FAO at 23:50 walked out of arrivals, signed the contract by the kerb and were on the A22 inside fifteen minutes. The villa in Vilamoura was 25 minutes away — no shuttle, no waiting for a global-chain desk to reopen.

Cars are chosen in advance from real photos of the actual vehicle and reviews from previous renters on the same page.

Small cars run €15–22 a day in low season and €35–80 in July–August. The sweet spot is April–May and September–October: 18–25 °C, prices moderate, beaches still uncrowded.

Where to pick up the car: Faro airport (FAO)

Faro Airport (FAO) is Portugal's largest car-hire hub: more than 30 suppliers on a single site. Competition between brands keeps prices below those at OPO and LIS, especially in the shoulder seasons.

Rental desks and shuttles

All major international brands and Portuguese local partners — Centauro among them — share the common arrivals hall. International desks send you to the rental car park on a short shuttle. Local Portuguese partners meet you in arrivals by flight number or drop the car straight at your villa.

A family with two kids and a roof-bag of boogie boards skipped the shuttle queue entirely — their car was waiting outside arrivals at gate 4 with a Vilamoura address already in Google Maps.

Prices, season and booking

A small car (Clio, 208, Fiat 500) runs €15–22 a day in low season and €35–80 in July–August. An automatic is 25–40% more expensive than a manual.

From November to March, cars are often booked for a month or longer. British, Dutch and German travellers winter on the Algarve, and the long-term tariff is planned in advance.

Volkswagen Polo in Portugal

The car is very nice, clean! The new technology makes itself felt! (adjusts speed, corrects traffic). We got the rental car quickly! Within an hour it was delivered directly to the hotel! The employee was very kind, explained everything! Transfer of the car to the owner - no problems were not! All on trust! I think we justified it! Deposit was minimal, which suited us as travelers, but comfort - maximum! This company can be trusted!

Parking in Faro and on Algarve beaches

In Faro itself, zonal parking runs through the Câmara: paid weekdays 09:00–19:00 at €0.50–1 per hour. Sundays and after 19:00 are free. Pay at the meter or via EasyPark / Telpark. Underground car parks near the station and old town are €10–15 a day.

A guest forgot to start an EasyPark session on Rua de Santo António — €30 fine in the windscreen by lunchtime. Set the app up at pickup; it saves the morning.

Beach parks and the "guardiões"

On beach car parks in summer you meet the guardiões, informal attendants. They wave you into a free space and watch the car for €1–3 as a tip. Parking is officially free; tipping is the practice of the coast — not a scam.

The custom holds from Marinha to Quarteira. One or two euros, and the car is looked after while you swim.

Lagos, Albufeira, Benagil

In the centres of Lagos and Albufeira streets are narrow — leave the car at the edge and walk in. For the Benagil cave, the car is left at the free Marinha beach car park, where the boats depart.

Driving the A22 and N125

The defining feature of Algarve roads is the A22 Via do Infante. Unlike northern motorways with manual booths, the A22 is free-flow: no barriers, no cashiers, only cameras on gantries. Charges run automatically through Via Verde, which must be fitted in the hire car.

A first-time renter drove Faro to Lagos without checking the windscreen transponder — three uncharged passes, four weeks later a €120 notice from the supplier with admin fee on top. We hand over with the Via Verde light visible and ask you to confirm it.

The free alternative is the N125 national road — parallel along the coast, 20–30 minutes slower, no tolls and often more scenic. For short hops Faro → Albufeira or Faro → Tavira, many drivers choose it.

Summer peaks are 17:00–19:00 at weekends on the A22 around Albufeira and Lagos. Speed cameras on the A22 are dense; fines pass to the rental company with an admin fee of €20–50.

Through Almancil and Loulé the N125 shows you half the Algarve in an hour without a single toll. The alcohol limit is 0.5‰ for experienced drivers and 0.2‰ under three years. Police checks cluster in Lagos, Albufeira and on the Sagres approach on Saturday evenings.

Rates in Faro vary throughout the year depending on the season and the rental length.

Three rules that save money in the Algarve

RENT A CAR
  • Confirm Via Verde at pickup

The A22 is free-flow without booths, so without a transponder every passage becomes an automatic fine.

  • The N125 is the free A22 alternative

Twenty to thirty minutes slower, no tolls, and it actually goes through Almancil and Loulé instead of round them.

  • Tip the beach guardiões €1–3

Parking is officially free, but the small tip is local custom, and the car is genuinely watched while you swim.

Driving routes from Faro

The Algarve is compact: from Faro to the western Cape St Vincent is around 120 km, to the Spanish border 60. Everything fits within an hour and a half.

Albufeira, Lagos, Sagres

Albufeira — 40 km on the A22 (~€2.30 toll) or the free N125: the resort centre of the Algarve. Lagos — 90 km on the A22 (~€5.30): historic harbour and the Ponta da Piedade cliffs. Sagres and Cape St Vincent — 120 km: the south-western tip of mainland Europe, the lighthouse, the ocean and the sunsets.

Sagres rewards an early start. The sunset there is the real thing — the continent ends, and from there it is Atlantic to Brazil.

Tavira, Benagil, Monchique

Tavira — 35 km east: a quiet white town with a Roman bridge. Benagil — 50 km via Marinha: the famous domed cave, with boat trips departing from Marinha beach. Monchique — 70 km into the hills: the serra, the Caldas de Monchique thermal springs and cork forests.

Seville (Spain)

Seville — 200 km on the A22 plus the Spanish A49 across the Castro Marim — Ayamonte bridge (1 h 45 min). Both Schengen, cross-border fee €0–25 with a prior declaration.

Frequent Questions

How do I get from FAO airport to central Faro?

FAO is just 6 km from the centre. By car — 10–15 minutes; taxi and Bolt €10–15. City buses 14 and 16 run to the centre for €2.35. Along the coastal cycle path it is around half an hour by bike. It is one of Portugal's closest airports to its city — delays are about traffic, not distance.

Why are there so many rental brands at Faro?

FAO is Portugal's largest car-hire hub: more than 30 suppliers on one site. In the shoulder seasons the competition is strong and prices often beat OPO and LIS. It also means a wider model choice and a better chance of catching a good deal, particularly when booking ahead.

Will the car be delivered to my villa or hotel in the Algarve?

With local Portuguese operators — yes: delivery to villas, apartments and hotels in Albufeira, Vilamoura, Lagos, Quarteira, Tavira and Carvoeiro is usually free in working hours. Early-morning and late-night slots cost €25–60. International brands work only from their FAO desks and city offices.

What is the A22 and what makes it different?

The A22 is the main motorway across the Algarve from the Spanish border to Lagos. Unlike northern motorways, the A22 is free-flow: no booths, no barriers, only cameras on gantries. Charges run automatically through Via Verde, which is fitted in every hire car. Without a transponder the trip becomes an automatic fine.

Can I avoid the A22 toll?

Yes. The free N125 national road runs in parallel along the coast — 20–30 minutes slower, through small Algarve towns, often more scenic. For short hops Faro → Albufeira or Faro → Tavira many drivers choose it. On longer distances the A22 saves real time.

Where do I park in central Faro?

Câmara zonal parking applies on weekdays 09:00–19:00 at €0.50–1 per hour. Sundays and after 19:00 are free. Underground car parks near the station and old town are €10–15 a day. Tow trucks operate, but less aggressively than in Lisbon.

Who are the "guardiões" at Algarve beaches?

At beach car parks in summer informal attendants — guardiões — show you a free space and watch the car for a tip of €1–3. Officially the parking is free, but a small tip is the local custom. It is not a scam — the car is genuinely watched, and they have their own routine in the area.

How do I drive to Albufeira?

Albufeira is 40 km west. On the A22 — about half an hour, toll ~€2.30. On the free N125 — 45–50 minutes. On summer weekends the A22 around Albufeira slows down in the evening as visitors return to villas. Parking in the old town is paid; easier to park at the edge and walk down to the seafront.

Is Sagres and Cape St Vincent worth the drive?

Yes, especially for the sunset. Sagres is 120 km on A22 + N125, around an hour and a half. Cape St Vincent is the south-westernmost point of mainland Europe: a lighthouse, cliffs and the open Atlantic. Parking at the lighthouse is free. Wind of 50–70 km/h is normal even in summer. Pairs naturally with Lagos and Ponta da Piedade.

How do I reach the Benagil cave?

Benagil is 50 km from Faro via Marinha. The car is left at the free Marinha beach car park; from there boat tours run to the cave. Swimming or stepping inside the cave is currently not allowed; only organised groups land on the beach inside. Some travellers walk to Benagil along the cliff path between beaches.

Can I do Seville on a day trip?

Yes: 200 km on the A22 plus the Spanish A49 over the Castro Marim — Ayamonte bridge, around two hours each way. Both countries are in Schengen; cross-border fee €0–25 with a prior declaration in the booking. Without declaring, the insurance may not respond inside Spain. Spanish side has no tolls.

Long-term car hire on the Algarve in winter?

From November to March the Algarve is one of Europe's main winter bases for British, Irish, Dutch and German travellers. Monthly hire from local operators is €350–550 for a small car and €600–900 for an SUV. Booking is usually one to two months ahead. Residency is not required for short stays.

How do I drive from Faro to Lisbon?

280 km on the tolled A2, around three hours, tolls ~€21. The one-way fee (returning the car in Lisbon) is €30–80. The alternative is the Alfa Pendular train: three hours flat, ticket €20–35, no driving needed. The car wins if you stop in Évora or the Alentejo on the way.

Is Super CDW worth taking on the Algarve?

Worth it for most routes: dirt-track approaches to beaches, the narrow centres of Lagos and Albufeira, and the hill roads to Monchique generate plenty of small damage. Super CDW reduces the excess to zero and usually adds glass, alloys, tyres and the underbody. It is €8–15 a day at the desk and 20–40% cheaper online.

Speed cameras on the A22 — what to know?

The A22 is one of Portugal's most strictly monitored roads: cameras along its length, fines from €60 for minor speeding to €600+ for serious offences. The A22 limit is 120 km/h. Cameras are fixed, with mobile patrols also around Lagoa and Alvor. Fines pass to the rental company with an admin fee of €20–50.
