Car hire on Mykonos is what turns a flying visit into a real island week — four beaches, dinners across three villages, a slow morning at the Tourliani monastery. The island is tiny (85 km², 11 km long) and Chora is pedestrian, so not every traveller needs four wheels.
A car on Mykonos is a holiday-shape decision. Four nights in one Chora hotel and the taxi rank wins. Seven days with kids, two suitcases and beach plans across the south coast — without a car, the logistics fall apart by day three.
Mykonos is the most expensive Greek island for car hire: economy from $45 in shoulder season, up to $150 a day in August. The fleet is tight, demand is heavy, book 2–3 months ahead. The island has a single airport — JMK, 4 km from Chora.
Book Mykonos as early as you can. In May or September a car two weeks out is realistic; in July and August everything's gone two months out.
There's not a single toll road on Mykonos. Every kilometre of road on the island is free.
What travellers value here
-
Early booking
Demand outruns supply — booking through TakeCars two or three months ahead secures the right class at a sane price.
-
Hotel delivery
Local operators bring the car to Ornos, Platis Gialos and Psarou free of charge on rentals from five days.
-
Quad alternative
When a car isn't available or doesn't suit the trip, the same supplier can switch you to an ATV on the same booking.
Delos, Ano Mera and the Meltemi
With a car (or ATV) three main days take shape.
Delos by boat
Delos is UNESCO and the mythological birthplace of Apollo. Boats leave the Old Port at 9:00 and 11:30, return at 13:00 and 15:00. Site plus museum takes around 3 hours. The hire car can't board — leave it at Fabrika or your hotel.
Take the morning boat. Midday on the island is brutally hot with no shade, and the last return is at 15:00. By 16:00 you're back in Chora for dinner with the salt still in your hair.
Ano Mera
Ano Mera sits 8 km from Chora — the only inland village on Mykonos. The 16th-century Tourliani monastery has a carved iconostasis and old icons; the central square holds tavernas at sensible prices, away from the tourist polish.
Meltemi season
The Meltemi is a dry northerly wind that dominates the Cyclades from July to August. It's strongest on the north beaches (Fokos, Ftelia, Agios Sostis) and the western coast. A cabriolet in this season is uncomfortable: noise, dust, and the roof flaps more than it works.
If you're flying in July or August and the car matters, book a hatchback. Cabrios on Mykonos work in May or September, when the Meltemi sleeps and the open roof actually earns its premium.
JMK airport and where to base
Mykonos airport (JMK) sits 4 km from Chora — about 10 minutes by car. It's one of the most compact airports in Greece: single terminal, no separate car park building, local operators meet you at the exit.
A guest landed at JMK on a 02:10 charter from Gatwick. Sign at arrivals, paperwork done at the car under the awning, key in hand by 02:25. By 02:45 he was at his hotel in Ornos. The KTEL bus had stopped hours earlier.
Three basing options on Mykonos. Chora (Mykonos Town) — for those who want dinners and nightlife within walking distance and the beach a 10–15 minute drive away. Ornos / Platis Gialos / Psarou — beach zones on the south, useful for families. Ano Mera — the only inland village, quieter and cheaper, but further from the action.
Local operators on TakeCars usually deliver the car free to Ornos, Platis Gialos and Ano Mera on rentals from 5 days. A common pattern is to pick up at JMK, stay three nights in Chora, then move down to Ornos or Platis Gialos for the back half of the week.
Parking in Chora and at the beaches
Chora is fully pedestrian: driving in is impossible, and your hotel almost certainly won't have a car park if it's a boutique inside the town. You park at one of two big lots — Fabrika (by the bus station) or Korfos (by the windmills). Both are paid ($10–15 a day in high season) and fill by 11 a.m. in August.
A traveller drove down at 11:40 in mid-August, did one full lap of Fabrika, and ended up waiting twenty-eight minutes for a Spaniard to leave. Before 10:00 the same lot has a third of the cars and no queue at all.
Beach car parks at Paradise, Super Paradise, Platis Gialos and Psarou are mostly free, but small. Psarou stands out — parking there is often paid ($8–12 a day) because it's a premium zone. If you book sun-loungers from a beach restaurant, they often include parking in the day-bed package.
One guest left his hire car on a Chora pedestrian lane for "five minutes" while collecting a takeaway. He came back to nothing. $80 fine, $50 tow, half an afternoon recovering the keys.
In Ano Mera the parking by the Tourliani monastery and the central square is free. That makes a half-day inland trip basically zero-friction.

Frequently asked questions
The most expensive Greek island for hire. In shoulder (May, October) economy is from $45 a day; in July–August it climbs to $80–150. The fleet is small and demand is heavy — book 2–3 months ahead. Automatics and cabrios in August go a month out.
Not always. With 3–4 nights in Chora doing walks and a couple of dinners — a car isn't critical: taxis and buses work well. With 5+ days, beaches in different bays, dinners in Ano Mera and a Delos trip — yes, a car gives real freedom.
Depends on the format. ATV ($30–60 a day) suits solo or a couple without luggage; parking is easier. A car ($45–150) suits families with kids, rain, or strong Meltemi. Many take a car for 3–4 days and an ATV for the rest. Rules: ATVs require an ordinary B-class licence and a helmet.
4 km, about 10 minutes by car. No tolls. Alternatives are the local KTEL bus at €1.80 (15 minutes) or a taxi at $15–25.
No. Mykonos hire cars are not allowed on any ferry — to Santorini, Paros, Naxos or the mainland. The contract is voided and insurance won't apply. Return at JMK and pick up a fresh car at the next island.
Chora is fully pedestrian. Two big car parks: Fabrika by the bus station and Korfos by the windmills. Both paid ($10–15 in high season), filling by 11 a.m. in August. Aim for the lot before 10:00, otherwise you'll queue 20–30 minutes.
Delos is a boat trip — the car doesn't go. Leave it at the hotel (if booking included parking) or at Fabrika ($10–15 a day). From Fabrika to the Old Port is 5 minutes' walk or a $5 taxi. Boats at 9:00 and 11:30, returns at 13:00 and 15:00.
No, none. Every road on Mykonos is free. Your road budget here is petrol and the Chora car parks.
Only in shoulder season (May and September–October). In July and August the Meltemi is strong — especially on the north beaches and the west coast — and a cabrio becomes uncomfortable: noise, dust, and full sun. Out of those months it's a nice pick.
The Meltemi is a dry northerly wind dominating the Cyclades from July to August (sometimes catching late June and early September). Speeds up to 50 km/h are common. It affects driving on bends and with the roof down or windows open. High-sided cars and vans feel it more.
At most beaches (Paradise, Super Paradise, Elia) parking is free but small. Psarou is often paid ($8–12 a day) — premium zone. If you book sun-loungers from a beach restaurant, parking is usually included in the day-bed package.
Yes, easily. Ano Mera is 8 km from Chora, 15 minutes by road. Parking by the Tourliani monastery and the central square is free. A neat day-loop: Ano Mera in the morning, Kalafati or Agios Sostis beach on the way back.
Small — Hyundai i10, Toyota Aygo, Fiat Panda. The narrow village lanes and tight car parks call for a small car. An SUV is overkill and almost impossible to park in Chora. For 3+ with cases, a Hyundai i20 is the better balance.
Mykonos has the strictest drink-drive enforcement of any Greek island. Police patrol around the Paradise and Super Paradise clubs from 23:00 to 04:00. The limit is 0.5‰, dropping to 0.2‰ for under-2-year licences. After clubs, take a taxi (24/7) and leave the car at the restaurant or club car park.
Yes, but at heavy reduction. From November to March there are very few flights (mostly Athens plus rare charters), and most rental offices close. In low season, book 3 weeks ahead — or pick up in Athens and take the ferry over.
