Car rental in Thessaloniki opens three directions at once: Halkidiki with its three peninsulas, Meteora in the mountains, and the Balkan borders 70 km away. The city itself is a compact south-Balkan capital, and Macedonia airport sits 16 km from the centre — half the Athens distance, with arrivals-to-desk done in five minutes.

Hire in Thessaloniki is about speed. The airport is close to the city, dozens of local operators work here, and outside high season you can grab an automatic the day before you fly in.

The city is easy on tram and metro (open since 2024), and FreeNow taxis are cheap — a car is mainly for Halkidiki and day trips, not the centre. Northern Greece is far less crowded in August than Attica.

May–June and September–October are the best windows for Thessaloniki. The sea is still or already warm, Meteora is empty, and prices run 30–40% below August.

Where to drive from Thessaloniki

A hire car from Thessaloniki opens four scenarios: Halkidiki beaches, the Mount Athos pilgrimage via Ouranopoli, Meteora as a day trip, and the Olympus / Litochoro / Vergina mountain combo. The Balkan borders sit two hours away in either direction.

If your main goal is Halkidiki, plan for a car. Buses to Sani and Sarti are awkward and infrequent, and the inner Sithonia coast is barely reachable without your own wheels.

Halkidiki splits into three peninsulas: Kassandra is resorts and all-inclusive, Sithonia is wild coves and pine forests, Athos is a closed monastic republic open only to men with a Diamonitirion permit. Meteora sits 230 km and 2.5 hours away on the Egnatia Odos motorway — realistic as a single day. Olympus with the summit climb takes a full day, but you can stop at Litochoro and the beach below it.

From Thessaloniki you can do Meteora and a Litochoro stop in a single day — leave by 7 a.m. and you're back by 22:00. Solo travellers are better off with a Kalambaka overnight.

The headline UNESCO site of northern Greece — the Macedonian royal tombs at Vergina (130 km) — is often combined with Edessa and its waterfalls in a single loop.

SKG airport pickup

Macedonia airport (SKG) is one of the most conveniently placed in Europe: just 16 km from the centre of Thessaloniki, around 25 minutes by car without traffic. That's half the distance to Athens ATH, and noticeably closer than Rome, Barcelona or Paris airports.

In Thessaloniki we meet guests right inside the arrivals hall, 50 metres from baggage. No shuttle to a separate building — paperwork done on the spot in 10 minutes.

Local Greek operators on TakeCars keep desks inside the terminal and offer a meet-by-name pickup. That's friendlier than the international desks: the international chains sit in a separate CarPark building, a 5–7 minute walk or shuttle away.

Hotel delivery in the city centre is free at most local operators on rentals from 5 days. If you're heading to Halkidiki the next day, ask for delivery to your hotel directly.

From the airport towards Halkidiki you take the E90 ring road: no tolls, 90 minutes to Kassandra, around 2 hours to Ouranopoli (the Mount Athos ferry port).

Parking in Thessaloniki

The main rule of Thessaloniki parking: instead of towing, the police remove your number plates. If you leave the car in a paid zone unpaid, you can come back to a car standing exactly where you left it — but with the plates gone. Fine $45–90, retrieve at the police station.

Plate removal is its own shock for tourists. In Athens they tow; in Thessaloniki they just take the plates. The car stays put, but without the plates you can't leave the city.

The centre has two zones: blue is for residents, white is paid for visitors (about €1.50 per hour). Pay through EasyPark or Apcoa apps — both work with foreign cards. On Sundays and after 21:00 on weekdays, central paid zones go free.

The smartest first move: park underground at Plateia Eleftherias or by the HELEXPO exhibition centre — $6–10 a day, no plate-removal surprises.

The waterfront promenade Nikis is a no-parking zone outright — fully pedestrian. If your hotel is in the Ladadika district, leave the car at the Aristotelous Square car park.

Rates in Thessaloniki vary throughout the year depending on the season and the rental length.

Why book with us

RENT A CAR
  • Paperwork inside arrivals

Local suppliers meet you 50 metres from baggage claim and hand over the keys in about ten minutes — no shuttle, no separate building.

  • Hotel or resort delivery

Many operators bring the car to Kassandra, Ouranopoli or a city hotel on advance request — usually free on rentals of 5+ days.

  • Direct chat with the supplier

Ask via the TakeCars message before booking whether crossing into North Macedonia or Bulgaria is allowed — terms differ between operators.

Halkidiki and the Mount Athos pilgrimage

Halkidiki is the headline destination from Thessaloniki: three peninsulas, three different stories.

Kassandra

The most "developed" of the three: Sani, Kallithea, Hanioti. Long beaches, all-inclusive resorts, short distances, good roads. A car is more about convenience than access here.

Sithonia

Pine forests and wild coves — Kalogria, Lagomandra, Kriaritsi. A car is the only realistic way in: the inner roads to the best coves are gravel and public transport barely runs.

Before Sithonia, ask the supplier whether gravel roads are allowed — some operators don't cover off-road damage under CDW. Local TakeCars suppliers tend to be more flexible on this.

Athos and Ouranopoli

The third peninsula, Mount Athos, is a closed monastic republic. Only men can enter, and only with a Diamonitirion permit from the Pilgrims' Bureau on Egnatia 109 in Thessaloniki. The car stays in Ouranopoli at a guarded car park (~$6 a day); you reach the monasteries by ferry.

The Mount Athos ferry from Ouranopoli leaves at 9:45 a.m. — set off from Thessaloniki by 7:30. The car park sits to the right of the pier, and the coordinates are in the handover instructions.

Frequent Questions

How much does car hire in Thessaloniki cost on average?

In shoulder season (May–June, September–October) economy starts at $32 a day; in July–August prices rise to around $50. Thessaloniki runs 10–20% below Athens because tourist traffic is lighter. Automatics sit 30–60% above manuals and need 2–3 weeks of advance booking in high season.

How far is SKG airport from the centre?

16 km, about 25 minutes by car without traffic. No tolls — the route runs along the ring road and into the centre. Alternatives are city bus OASTH №78 at €2 (45 minutes) or a FreeNow taxi at $25–35.

How does paid parking work in central Thessaloniki?

Two zones: blue for residents, white for paid visitor parking (about €1.50 per hour). Pay through EasyPark or Apcoa apps. Sundays and after 21:00 on weekdays are free. The waterfront Nikis promenade is a no-parking area outright.

What if my plates are removed for unpaid parking?

That's standard practice in Thessaloniki: instead of towing, the police take your plates. Go to the nearest police station's anti-illegal parking unit, pay a $45–90 fine and retrieve the plates within 1–2 hours. Without them you can't drive out of the city.

Is Meteora a feasible day trip from Thessaloniki?

Yes, unlike from Athens. 230 km and 2.5 hours each way on the Egnatia Odos motorway (around $11 in tolls return). Leave by 8 a.m., be on site by 11, fit in 3–4 monasteries and head back by 19:00. For sunset shots and a slower pace, take an overnight in Kalambaka.

Where do I park in Ouranopoli before the Mount Athos ferry?

A guarded car park sits to the right of the departure pier — around $6 a day, no booking needed. The Mount Athos ferry leaves at 9:45 a.m., so set off from Thessaloniki by 7:30. You can leave the car for 1–4 days (the standard pilgrimage length), paid on arrival.

How do I get a Diamonitirion and how much does it cost?

The Diamonitirion is the entry permit for Mount Athos and is issued only to men. Apply at the Pilgrims' Bureau on Egnatia 109 in Thessaloniki, or online in advance. Cost is €25 for Orthodox visitors and €35 for everyone else. Book 2–6 months ahead — high-season slots fill up.

Can I take a Thessaloniki hire car into North Macedonia?

Yes, with the supplier's prior consent and a Green Card insurance certificate. The Evzoni / Bogorodica border is 70 km from Thessaloniki and clears in 30 minutes. Tip: cross before 09:00 to avoid the high-season queue, which can run an hour each way.

What is a Green Card and where do I get one?

A Green Card is a third-party motor insurance certificate that extends cover outside the EU — needed for North Macedonia, Turkey, Albania and Serbia. It's separate from Schengen. The supplier issues it for 1–14 days at $15–40 depending on country and length. Ask for it at booking, not at handover.

Can I drive into Bulgaria from Thessaloniki?

Yes. Bulgaria became a full Schengen member on 1 January 2025 (land-border checks lifted), but operators still require advance notice and in some cases a Green Card — insurer rules haven't quite caught up with policy. The Promachonas border is 130 km away, Sofia is 310 km.

Can I drive into Turkey on a hire car?

Generally yes, but not with every supplier. The Kipi border sits 600 km from Thessaloniki, more easily reached via Kavala. You'll need a Green Card ($35–55) and a written authorisation from the operator. Some companies restrict Turkey for theft and insurance reasons.

Do I need a car for a holiday on Kassandra?

It depends on the format. With an all-inclusive in Sani, Kallithea or Hanioti, a car isn't critical: KTEL buses run and most resorts include a transfer. If you want to hop between coves or eat in different villages, a car gives the freedom. For Sithonia and Athos, a car is essential.

How much are the tolls Thessaloniki — Meteora?

Around $11 return on the Egnatia Odos motorway. Each gate costs €1.50–€2.80, and you'll cross 3–4 gates each way. Pay in euro cash or by card. A transponder is normally not required for Egnatia at local suppliers.

Which car is most convenient on the Sithonia bends?

Compact class — Hyundai i10, Toyota Aygo, Fiat Panda. Inner Sithonia roads are narrow, the cove car parks are small, and the bends are gentle. An SUV is overkill. For motorway comfort with air-con, a Hyundai i20 or Volkswagen Polo is the better balance.

Where can I find an automatic in Thessaloniki?

Automatics in Thessaloniki are scarcer than in Athens — around 20–25% of the fleet against 35–45%. Book 2–3 weeks ahead in high season. On TakeCars, automatics are listed by larger local operators. If automatic is non-negotiable, also consider Athens with a one-way drop-off (from $60 fee).
