Option 3 - Title: Sutomore car hire from age 18 — Skadar, Old Bar - Description: One of the few suppliers from age 18 on the coast. Base for Lake Skadar via Sozina tunnel, Old Bar, Velika Plaža. No mandatory credit card.
Car hire in Sutomore is a rare combination on this coast: budget-friendly rates on rooms and cars, a two-kilometre sand-and-pebble beach, and the southern entrance to the Sozina tunnel right outside town. Of all coastal towns on the Riviera, Sutomore is the quickest jump to Podgorica and Lake Skadar — and the only beach town where Podgorica airport is closer and faster than Tivat.
A guest landing at TGD at 11pm last August met the host by flight number at arrivals. Contract signed on the bonnet, keys in hand in seven minutes, in the door of an apartment in Sutomore by midnight.
Without a car the town feels bigger than the map suggests. In summer the transit flow from inland runs straight through the centre, taxis climb fast, and the neighbouring spots — Bar, Old Bar, Lake Skadar — are awkward without your own wheels.
What sets Sutomore apart
The Sozina tunnel
Sutomore is where the Sozina tunnel meets the coast — €2.50 per car, around 4 km under the mountain to the Lake Skadar side. From here it's 45 minutes to Podgorica and 30 to Virpazar. No other coastal town has this built in.
If your trip leans into the mountains and Lake Skadar, basing in Sutomore saves an hour each way over Budva or Kotor.
Belgrade–Bar railway
Sutomore is the only Montenegrin coastal town with its own Belgrade–Bar station, 100 metres from the sea. The line crosses Serbia and the mountainous interior — a working alternative to flying for travellers taking the slow route in from Belgrade or Podgorica.
Haj-Nehaj and Tabija
Above the town, 230 metres up, sits Haj-Nehaj fortress (1542). The walk up takes about an hour; the car waits at the base. For sunset, locals drive up to Tabija fortress on the Golo Brdo hill — a short run with a postcard view of the coast.
Walk up to Haj-Nehaj early or late. At midday it's not worth it. From the top you see the coast all the way to Velika Plaža in Ulcinj.
Where to drive from Sutomore
Old Bar and Stara Maslina
Old Bar — a UNESCO medieval complex abandoned after the 1979 earthquake — lies 8 km from Sutomore. Right next to it, in Mirovica, stands Stara Maslina: one of the oldest olive trees in Europe, more than 2,000 years old. A useful half-day route.
Lake Skadar via Sozina
The tunnel takes about 30 minutes to Virpazar, the lake's main pier. Boat tours run €20–30 per person. The wineries of Godinje village, with their Vranac wine, sit an hour away along the scenic serpentine on the western shore.
A day at Lake Skadar from Sutomore fits one drive: morning through the tunnel, lake carp for lunch at Virpazar, a winery, and back for dinner at home.
Hidden beaches towards Bar
Devachen is a small sheltered beach reached through narrow pedestrian tunnels cut into the cliffs. The Red Beach (Crvena Plaža) between Sutomore and Bar gets its colour from local iron-bearing rock. Both are easier with a car — public transport barely reaches them, and the car parks are tiny.
For Devachen and the Red Beach, arrive before 11am. By midday the lots fill up and there's little space left on the sand.
Reaching Sutomore and collecting the car
Sutomore has no airport of its own, but it carries a rare advantage along this coast: Podgorica at 45 km via the Sozina tunnel (€2.50) is closer and quicker than Tivat. The drive from TGD takes about 45 minutes; from TIV, an hour and ten plus the coastal-road queues. It flips the usual Riviera logic.
A couple flew into TGD on a Saturday morning, drove out via the tunnel and were on the Sutomore seafront by lunch — no Budva traffic, no Petrovac serpentine, no hour wasted.
There are few permanent rental offices in Sutomore itself, but most suppliers run meet-and-greet by flight number at TGD or TIV with hand-over on the spot. Free hotel delivery to Sutomore, Brca and Bar is the norm, particularly for hires of eight days or more out of season. Local suppliers here often hold the lowest rates on the coast — an economy car can run €15–25 per day in low season, €30–45 for an automatic crossover.
If you're landing late at night, take the car the next morning. The night drive from Tivat via Budva and the Petrovac serpentine adds time you don't need.
Rates in Sutomore vary throughout the year depending on the season and the rental length.

Parking, transit traffic, Sutomore quirks
Centre parking in summer
The town's weakest point. Sutomore was built without serious urban planning, and the room for cars is genuinely short. Paid lots along the seafront run €1–2 per hour and fill from 9am. Accommodation with its own garage or fenced car park is essential, particularly in July and August.
A guest staying near the seafront in mid-July ran the meter through a parking app, then forgot to top it up while at the beach — a €40 fine on the windscreen by 2pm. Pin it to your home screen if you can.
Transit through town
The E65/E80 Adriatic Highway runs straight through Sutomore, and the entire flow from inland Montenegro towards Bar via the Sozina tunnel goes through the town centre. In summer, particularly 11am–1pm and 5pm–7pm, the centre stalls. A planning legacy that won't change soon.
Best windows to drive
Out before 10am westbound (Budva, Kotor, Tivat). Back after 7pm. For trips through Sozina the summer queues are minor — the tourist flow mostly stays on the coastal road.
