Car rental in Kayseri Airport is the fastest way into Cappadocia without juggling shuttle transfers. Kayseri Erkilet Airport (ASR) sits 75 km from Göreme and 10 km from the city centre, so you can collect a car at the terminal and reach the valleys, the underground cities or Mount Erciyes within an hour or so.
A couple arrived on a 2am flight from Istanbul and the agent was already in arrivals with their Fiat Egea. Contract signed on the bonnet, in Ürgüp by 3:30 — the airport hotel shuttle was still loading at the kerb when they pulled out.
International chains and local Turkish suppliers run desks inside the terminal. In balloon season and Erciyes ski weeks the fleet thins fast — a pre-booked car beats any transfer on price, and for the dawn launch over Göreme it is far easier to drive out at night than to chase a taxi at six in the morning.
Routes from ASR
The classic loop from ASR is Göreme, Ürgüp, Avanos, Uçhisar Castle and the Göreme Open-Air Museum. Add the underground cities of Kaymaklı and Derinkuyu, both reached by paved roads, and Mount Erciyes ski resort right next to Kayseri — ASR is the natural pickup point for a winter trip.
A guest drove up to the Sunset Point above Göreme at 5:40am instead of the main square. Eight balloons inflating below the lens, no minibus on his bumper, and a clean parking spot still free at six.
If you want more distance, a car from Kayseri opens one-way routes. Konya sits about 2h30 away, Ankara around 3h30. For longer drives several suppliers allow drop-off in another city: rent a car in Istanbul or hire a car in Antalya can be a clean pair with a Kayseri pickup for a "Cappadocia → coast or capital" route. Confirm the one-way fee before booking — not every supplier charges, and the figure depends on the route. On long-haul drives in summer leave early: afternoon heat turns a 7-hour run to the coast into eight, and petrol stations on side stretches are sparser than they look on the map.

A couple without a usable credit card paid 4,000 lira cash at the Göreme office. The agent counted the notes, sealed the envelope with the contract number, and handed it back untouched ten days later in Avanos.
The classic stumbling block is the card. Big international networks require a credit card in the driver's name and routinely refuse debit cards. If that is a problem, a slice of local Cappadocia suppliers will take a cash deposit (Turkish Lira or Euro) or work without a deposit at all under their own rules — that is the route that unlocks the booking for travellers without a usable credit card.
Practical checks
Photograph the contract page that shows the deposit amount and currency, agree on when the unblock will happen, and bring some cash for fuel and the first day's tolls — petrol stations on remote side roads do not always accept foreign cards smoothly.
