Every supplier offering a rental car in Vienna at Schwechat works out of the same place: the Car Rental Center on Level 0 of car park P4. From the arrivals concourse it's about a hundred and fifty metres along a covered underground passage. Big or small, regional or global — the address is identical. The difference is who walks you through it and at what time of day.
P4 Level 0
After bag claim, walk to the sliding doors, turn left, and follow the Car Rental signs down the underground passage. Two travelators run most of the way. The walk is about three minutes light-luggage, five with a stroller and two suitcases. Every desk is on a single curving counter on Level 0. The check-in queue is the slowest part — fifteen to forty minutes depending on flight bunching.
Meet-and-greet at the gate
A different pattern works for travellers who book with TakeCars partners offering arrivals-hall service. The supplier checks your flight number, watches the live arrivals board, and waits in the public arrivals concourse with a sign. Contract is signed on a tablet, car walked through together, keys handed over. No P4 walk, no queue at a counter.
A guest from Sydney landed at 23:15 last November after a delayed Singapore connection. By 23:40 he was driving out of short-term parking with a meet-and-greet supplier — same time the late-arriving travellers at the chain desks were still in the P4 queue, paying a €60 after-hours surcharge.
The after-hours question
International chains in P4 keep the counter open 24/7 but charge an out-of-hours fee — typically €60 — between roughly 22:00 and 06:00. The fee is added at the desk, not always shown on the booking screen. Meet-and-greet suppliers don't charge it because they don't pay P4 to keep a counter staffed overnight: they come to you.
Getting in and out of VIE
A few practical numbers for arrival and departure:
- City Airport Train (CAT). Wien Mitte in 16 minutes, €14.90. Useful for a no-car arrival before a day-of pickup elsewhere.
- ÖBB S7 train. 25 minutes to Wien Mitte for €4.30. Same direction, much cheaper.
- By car. A4 motorway, 20 minutes outside rush hour, up to 40 in heavy traffic. From the centre at 08:00 weekday, allow a full hour.
Refuelling before drop-off
The closest petrol stations to VIE for a full-tank return are in Schwechat town, two minutes off the airport access road. OMV and Shell on Wiener Straße both work. Keep the receipt until the keys change hands — fuel disputes at drop-off are the most common refund delay, and a paper receipt resolves them on the spot.
Bottom line
Every Vienna-Schwechat rental ends up at the same P4 counter unless you book a meet-and-greet supplier who comes to arrivals. The €60 after-hours fee is real and avoidable. The refuel point is closer than most assume. Plan the first and last twenty minutes of the rental as carefully as the route in between.
